I need to order my appliances soon and am thinking the same thing. I am looking at a Jenn Air range with convection and the OTR microwave with convection and speed cook. I'm by myself, so I figured I could use the OTR for everyday. I also have company quite often, so it would be like having two ovens. Not sure if I need two convections though. There isn't that much difference in price between the Jenn Air range with convection and without. The convection has a few more options, temp probe, warming drawer, special burner, so I'm looking at that too.

What are the specs for the microwave and range? I have a Dacor gas cooktop and OTR MW and the info for the MW give's the maximum BTU from the cooktop that it can handle. The top of my MW is 36" above the top of the cooking grates on my cooktop, and I have the deflector in place. I have probably never had all the burners going, even when I'm canning, so I doubt I've ever gotten even close to the maximum BTU's, which is well below the max the MW can handle. I have no idea why the salesman would tell you that except to sell you a Dacor :-). The issue is that a microhood generaaly has 300 CFMs or less and not a great capture area. Depending on what you cook you're generally better off with 600 CFMs for a 30" range. Can you live with a microhood over your Wolf - probably but you'd really be better off putting in a real hood regardless of what brand of range you buy.

Hungry, Duel fuel units are becoming more and more popular. Many home chefs love to cook on gas, but like the control of an electric oven. With that being said, all professional chefs want to use gas ovens. Typically they are better for baking in that a by product of combustion is moisture and that helps to keep your cookies, breads, etc coming out great every time. Antss is correct in that micro hoods do not vent as well on gas because they don't remove the heat from the room and only filter out some of the odors (if you are recirculating the air instead of venting outside). But in a lot of cases, recirculation is the only option to the homeowner. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you're leaning towards a convection and microwave combo. That really gives you tons of flexibility in your kitchen. If you're only cooking for two one night, there's no reason to fire up the big oven when you can bake chicken breasts in the microwave with the convection setting.
