Can Hear Nieghbor Downstairs... HELP!!!

I have lived in my co-op for three years now and I must say I love it. But the woman downstairs has become much louder then she was in the begining. I have looked into sound proofing for the floors. (the floors are the main problem) But the cost is quite high. I was wondering if anyone has had my same problem and found success with anything. I hear cork is best but hope I can find someone out there who has used it and knows first hand. Thanks.

Talk to the co-op about having the woman downstairs change back to being as quiet as she used ot be.

Ahnd talk to the woman about changing those behaviors that you can hear.

I've read about "floating" floors--which have a layer between them...apparently, they help with soundproofing

We are first time home buyers of a condo conversion in San Diego. We moved in at the end of November 2006. In April we got new upstairs neighbors. Ever since it has been hell. They are very nice people, but it sounds like they are constantly moving things and never sit still. The wife is a heavy stepper and so are their friends. We have asked them 3 times to be aware of the people below them. They apologize, it stops for a few days then starts all over again. I have recently written them a letter stating the noise continues and we need to come up with a solution. I even included a log of when we hear them. we literally hear them every minute they are home till they go to bed. They then came back to us and said that they can only tip-toe for so long and it is what it is and maybe the complex needs better insulation. I then explained to them that we only hear one person walking around not two. So clearly it is the heavy footed person and guests we hear. When the husband is home alone we don't hear anything. When my boyfriend went upstairs to talk to them again, I could barely hear him and he is 200lbs and flat footed. And because it is about every minute continuing to log it will be...... well... Not to mention what recourse do we have? Any legal help? We can't call the police on walking or constantly moving furniture. Our HOA says that anything with homeowners is between homeowners unless it is on the HOA property.. We have done it the nice way (SEVERAL TIMES), now our only option is to fight fire with fire.. I want to make noise so when they mention it to us we can make an agreement. Or say "we are simply trying to MASK the noise you are making"... Hmmm this sux! I hate to have to feel and be like this.

I would insulate first correctly and only then think about spending all that money for one or 2 new furnaces. If your thermostat is located on the first floor above the crawl and the crawlspace is large, its serving as a heat sink and you are losing heat thru the floor to the improperly insulated crawlspace below. This would cause im guessing the furnace to run alot longer to reach the desired temp. By the time its done so, its run so long it has overheated the 2nd floor. Where are you located and can you describe the crawlspace? Does it have vents? Crawls generally should only be insulated on the crawl walls and the vents sealed/closed depending on your location. The idea is to keep the cold air out of the crawl in winter instead of washing by some batts up on the floor. Fiberglass batts really lose R value when exposed to "wind washing". Insulate the walls of the crawlspace up to the sill with 2 inch foamboard, tape or foam all seams and put a 6 mill poly vapor barrier on the floor of the crawl. Use full sheets and overlap when needed by 12 to 24 inches and tape all seams. Run the poly up the insulated walls about 12 inches and seal it to the foamboards as well. Total cost: proly 50 to 100 bucks in supplies. Way cheaper than 2 furnaces. Good luck

bpathome - i totally know what you mean, why put the 1/2 bath in the garage if they can just use the great outdoors...although neither of them really do that unless if they're desperate and a bathroom isn't around. considering how many times they pee on the toilet, i might rather them pee outside anyhow ;) j/k yes, the hanging space in the laundry room is for clean clothes, but one of the most things we hang up is our jeans. i just can't see that fitting above a counter unless if we folded them or if we have the rod super close to the ceiling; in which case i would need a step stool to access it. so i felt like having full drip dry hanging was important to have in the laundry. the desk in the mudroom is really a 'drop zone' and place to sort through mail - not really working from home in there or anything. it might end up being just a counter top and no space to sit. yes, the vacuum could definitely go in the laundry room too - I wasn't sure if I'd like it in the laundry room or in the mudroom more. girlguineapig - do you have the linen closet dividing the two sinks in your bathroom at home too? do you think that'll feel too separated? mommytoc - i prefer the laundry off of the mudroom too! glad you do too. with the boys' sports, i think taking really dirty clothes off in the mudroom and straight to the w/d will be a good idea. I was opting for us to have a closet instead of lockers. the main reason being because we have so many coats. in the pacific northwest you end up having a TON of coats - and they typically clog up the hall closet by the front door. With this layout we can keep those just for guests and put all of ours (plus our shoes down below) in the mudroom. for the downstairs bath - a hutch style is a great idea. i thought of that but also wondered if we'd end up spending more on countertops since it would have to be a pretty big slab to run that entire length. maybe it's less expensive to divide them with a closet. Know what I mean? Thank you so much for all of your input - it's really making me rethink our layout!!

You should be thinking about who is going to buy your house later when you want or need to sell it. A shoddy renovation will turn buyers off and they will run from your house. It's okay to have some inexpensive finishes....laminate countertop, etc but shoddy work is a sale killer every time. If buyers see shoddy wk in one area, they will assume that it is like that everywhere. Plumbing is a very important aspect of a home, and should be done correctly. Save some $ on countertops, etc, don't skimp on something important like plumbing. You might save some $ now, but will regret it later. Good luck on your Reno. Post some pictures. We would love to see them.

I found the best success is to talk to the neighbor. You don't say how she has suddenly become louder after 3 years and odds are she doesn't know that the noise she makes travels upstairs so well.

The least expensive way is to be a neighbor and talk to your neighbor as a first step.

We run a noise fan at night; I went to Wal-Mart and was able to listen to all their small fans and got the loudest. At least this helps at night.

I'd say tell the woman if she doesn't stop being loud, you're going to be a major pain in the ass. Tell her you'll stop at nothing to make her life worse then it ever has been. Tell her you don't care about her or her needs, you just care about your own.

Remember you live ABOVE her...feel free to wear heavy boots and frequently walk across the floor especially in the bedroom late at night...do this frequently and make sure you walk over all areas of your apartment so she can't escape it by moving around...also randomly throw heavy things on the uncarpeted kitchen bathroom floors. She will move out quite soon.

Retaliation doesn't work and can backfire on you. Talk to the co-op management and see what they have to say. If you get no satisfaction, and do not feel comfortable talking to the woman, slip a note under her door asking her if she would please be mindful of the noise. You can even phrase it by saying, "Is anything wrong? I've noticed lately that there is a lot more noise coming from your place..." etc.

Perhaps it is something as simple as the woman has become hard of hearing. Try talking to her and see if this is the case. She may be unaware she has become louder. It may be easier to soundproof her ceiling than your floor.

I have the same problem. Stereo at 2 a.m. I've tried nicely talking to her, talking to my landlord, yelling at her...finally the other night I called her cell and told her every time she keeps me up all night she is waking up with me in the morning.

Meanwhile I am exhausted and going prematurely grey.

Please let me know if you get any soundproofing tips :(
