great divide

There is an excellent article in todays nytimes regarding the dis-posession of china's peasants.

The same split of attitudes toward the environment seems to exist in china as here: those who view it purely with greed, and those who would be its stewards.

The latter group are far weaker in china than here; the situation appears to be precarious. What will be the impact to the rest of the world when the most populous country on the globe chews up its food-producing lands for quick individual profits and burns up most of the coal?

Already china's trade surplus is giving them an advantage over us in buying oil; I see that as a good thing, we'll be forced to wean off the sauce that much quicker and be stronger for it.

I predict china will take japan and southern asia by fiat or force within twenty years.
