Comments (9)Two twins here are the same as a king. So, I'd find out about getting the mattresses first before I changed anything. Otherwise, I'd look into someone adding a piece to the headboard and footboard to make it into a king. Just curious, but have you tried the air mattresses that can adjust each side to different "sleeping numbers." These mattresses must be divided underneath the top padding to be able to adjust with air to different hardnesses. Also, they have those foam mattesses that may help. I know that you said you'd tried some of the type to isolate motion, but these aren't specifically for that, so I didn't know if you'd tried them....See MoreConverting antique iron bed
Comments (30)I have an antique iron bed that I purchased from cathouse beds-- the rails were lengthened to accommodate a queen mattress and there's a 2 x 4 support that sits in the L of the rails. The mattress sits on top. I had a normal size box spring with a pillow top mattress on top and it was high-- but plenty sturdy. I had 2 very large dogs getting up on it with me.. and other times 2 adults. My style and needs have changed so I'll be looking to sell the bed-- but it worked out fine for me. Sorry, no pictures of the welds but I bet they have them on the cathouse bed site. I know they have an explanation of the process. I did not much mind the overhang of the mattress when the bed was made-- though it might bother someone who likes a more tailored bed. I could not use a skirt on the bed because of how the railings came in under the lip of the mattress. (edited to remove the photo-- i meant to load one showing the frame/mattress/bedding) This post was edited by funkyart on Fri, Mar 7, 14 at 11:51...See MoreAntique Rope Bed
Comments (5)It sounds like a magnificent piece of furniture. Don't try to camouflage it; play it up! Make it the star of the room. Give it breathing room and stage the room to show it off. Don't put much else in the way of furniture in there with it. If you need storage, look for underbed drawers that can be hidden under a bedskirt. Do not paint it, especially if it has its original finish. A rope bed is a true antique. If you need to lighten or brighten it, do so with the bed linens. Have you already selected your apartment? How large is the bedroom? Is there good closet storage, so you won't have to have dressers in the bedroom?...See MoreWidening antique double bed
Comments (2)Linnea56, So it sounds like you need to widen the bed just a bit. There are probably a few different ways of doing this. If you know a woodworker, you might enlist his/her help on this one. I will give you a few options that I can think of off hand. First, you could simply have the frame pieces replaced with longer ones. A professional could put a finish on the new pieces to get them very close to the original finish. This would also allow you to store the old pieces just in case you did ever want to cash in on your antique. As a professional furniture maker and refinisher, I recommend this as the best option since I hate to see a good antique heavily modified. As a second option, you could always extend the frame pieces. There are numerous ways to create the extension. Its hard for me to give a recommendation though since I dont know what type of joinery holds the frame into the post. This would still require the new wood to be finished so that it matches the existing bed. With either method, you will need to remove and replace the current support slat so that they span the new width. And if the bed doesnt already have them, be sure to add supports to the slats that span vertically from the floor to the bottom of the slats. If you have a picture, that would really help me give you more specific advice. Good luck. marc...See MoreRelated Professionals
