Installing a Miele (or other) speed oven behind a door?
Comments (30)The problem is the voltage required. There just aren't that many 240 volt switches that do what you need. There are several 120 ones though. Your best bet will be to talk to whomever is going to do the electrical for your renovation and have him talk to his local supply house. I'm certain that these switches do exist, as there is one on one of our welders that is housed in a job box, but I have never seen an attractive one that I would put into a kitchen. But, I'm not that up to date on uncommon electrical components. Your electrician may not be either, but he can make the supply houses do more research for him. If there is a solution out there that will work and look attractive, I'd bet that the local supply house in a large metro area like yours would know of it. And since you will need the electrician to install it anyway, put the burden of research onto him and he can put it onto the suppliers. Have you thought about just choosing a more "retro" looking oven so as to not feel so ashamed of it's modern looks as to need to conceal it? Edited to remove all of the links to wall ovens and not speed ovens. Comments (92)Why call a technician. If I can do it you can too. Open the oven door, take out 2 screws on the inside top and 2 on the inside bottom. Pull the oven door off the hinges with your hands on each side and pull evenly. Be sure to hold the parts of the door together and flat. Lay the door flat and open the end to pull out a glass piece, the one with all the little dots encircling the see through area. Remember that the rough side goes to the inside. Wash both pieces of glass with comet or similar. Wash any other grease or mess with an SOS pad and finish everything off with Windex. Put the glass back in and be sure the see through part is in so you can see into the oven without a band of black showing because you might have turned it half a turn. Now screw the big 2 screws back and be sure the glass isn't between the holes or you will crack your glass. They screw into the handle. You did clean the handle didn't you? Now pull the door hinges down from the stove and slide a big 3" nail or larger in the back of the hinge sideways to force the hinge to stay pointing out. Now lift the stove door up and slide the bottom onto the hinge evenly or it will bind up. Don't force it. Now the other 2 little screws with washers go back in the holes you took them out of. They attach the door to the hinge. During all of this process never touch any glass with your fingers, only the edges. Close the door and give yourself a pat on the back....See MoreMiele CSO to stack with 24" Miele speed oven or 30" single oven?
Comments (70)You can never have enough ovens. We have a 30" oven in addition to a 24" CSO and a 24" SpeedOven (incidentally, this is a wonderful combination). And still, there has been at least one meal, when I had to add a fourth improvised oven by using the gas grill on the deck. I also had to use a portable warming chest, and had to prepare a careful schedule for when to use which appliance. But then, I was cooking multiple courses for a gathering of more than 100 guests. Realistically though, 99% of the time, the combination of those two ovens should be enough. You might just have to do a little bit of planning on the rare occasions that you make huge amounts of food. But if budget is flexible, adding the SpeedOven wouldn't hurt. It's a good oven in its own right, and it can always serve as a great overflow option, when things get really tight. Is it mandatory? No, not at all? Will you enjoy having bought it? Yes, probably. It's a convenient luxury, if you regularly cook a lot....See MoreHave to choose between Miele 30" induction range vs. Miele gas range
Comments (33)AVOID MIELE RANGES. UNRELIABLE UNITS. TERRIBLE SERVICE. We've had Miele dishwashers for literally decades; they have been great, trouble-free performers. Not so the 36" gas range that we bought for a kitchen reno in 2016. The design is nice and the basic functionality is great, but the reliability is the absolute pits. MIele released this line of products before they were ready for prime time. And Miele knows it. We have had burners replaced several times for ignition failures. Last time around the technician replaced all six burners with "upgrades" (I'm guessing, redesigns that cure the faults of the original burners). The little part that detects when the oven door is closed and shuts off the broiler if it's open? It melted when the (extremely hot) broiler was on for more than a few minutes. The rubber feet for the grates constantly disintegrate; we've gone through literally a dozen of them. And now that our unit is out of warranty, Miele wants $32 each for replacements (and there are no aftermarket parts available anywhere). The latest problem is the oven door latch mechanism, which has failed so that the unit will not go into self-clean mode. Making matters worse, Miele's service operation was gutted during the pandemic and has not recovered. Their call center is offshore somewhere, and the people are clueless about the products. As for the technician dispatch in NJ ... don't get me started. Totally dysfunctional. The techs themselves are highly competent ... when you can actually get someone to come. Constant scheduling screwups, technicians not being told what parts to bring, several week lead times, etc. Their service is beyond unacceptable for a premium-priced brand. And we have yet to find a third-party repair service that will work on Miele ranges (dishwashers yes, ranges no). I'm sorely tempted to throw the thing out and go with Blue Star or Wolf. AVOID....See Moremassgirl
