kitchen aid dw dirty glasses

i'm not sure what my kitchen aid dw model # is,think it's either KUDS01IL or DL. I have loved it for past 3yrs ,however now the glasses are left w a very fine,sandpapery residue after every washing. DH took filter/grinder out and cleaned,still happening.Since its only the top rack and bottom rack ,incl silverware is as clean as a whistle,I'm wondering if it's something in top sprayer arm. We do have well water. Anything else anyone can suggest? I've heard there is a kichen aid forum,did a search for it here but no luck. Anyone know about this? julie

Do you have a high loop in your drain line (or an air gap)? If not, dirty water could be backing up into the DW - but frankly from your description, it sounds like the top arm is blocked or clogged.

I am just going to assume you are using jet dry- mine runs through it quickly-but it makes a huge difference!

I had the same problem with my dishwasher (LG)and had a tech come out and he was kind when telling my how simple the problem was to fix. Do not use powders- buy the tablets that are sealed. The powders absorb moister and ruins the product. Don't pre wash your dishes. Since they removed phalates, they replaced them with enzymes. The enzymes need something to eat so the dirtier your dishes are the better! Also make sure your hose thats prob under your sink is high enough. Ours was too low so some of the gunk would back up.

I'VE DONE THAT WITH MINE! I removed the silverware basket from day one. There's still a small corner caddy if need it. I put larger items in it. Removing the silverware basket opens up enough space for a larger frying pan or 9x13 pan (with room left over). I can't believe how much space this dw has. I found yet another tine (on the middle rack) that drops down for more customization. Putting your silverware on the top rack is a little slow at first as you learn what can go where but it doesn't take long to figure it out. The other day I placed a large splatter screen (it doesn't fit well in the bottom because I've dropped the middle rack due to my extra tall drinking glasses) on top of my silverware. I've had the smaller measuring cups up there too, so don't think of it as JUST for silverware and cutlery. I have the KUDE60 model. I needed black. The KUDE70 is ss and paneled AND 5 dB quieter! I think everything else is the same. If I could change one thing, it would be that the plate spacings on the bottom rack were a tiny bit closer together. I know a lot of people use larger stoneware plates but I use the thin Corelle plates. I could get more in there if the spacing as a bit tighter. Other than that, I'm extremely pleased with it :) Oh, also you can remove one or both of the cutlery racks. It's split in two. If you needed something really tall in the middle you can take out one of the racks and use the corner caddy for more silverware space if needed.

That video was showing the 3rd rack? My 8-10 year old KA has a split and removable 3rd racks that is just for silverware and cooking utensils. Both sides can come out in case you have really tall items (like a tall canning pot or stew pot) in the middle rack. I don't care for the looks of the newer KA 3rd rack. I've got plenty of room with the other two racks for bowls and glasses. I looked inside a KA (with 3rd rack) a few weeks ago at Lowes. It didn't look like the upper tray(s) were removable :(

tell me about it! I have struggled with this very problem with my kitchenaid for years, from day one. Are you using Cascade Complete? Its more expensive, but worth it. It doesn't eliminate the grit but helps. I have a spray arm that has tiny slits at the end that get clogged and makes the problem worse. Also, do you have soft water? It was suggested to me that a water softner would help but we never made the investment. An interesting note, this is my second kitchenaid in this kitchen, we removed the first one for that reason and installed it at our camp, thinking I could live with the grit for a few weeks a year. Guess what...it rarely happens there (lake water which is soft) and my new one here that replaced it threw the grit from day one. My plumber has the identical machine and said his dishes come out spotless. Hope I havent confused you. I dont think there is a solution, I think it's shooting the finely ground up food particles back at you. It gets inside my glasses and on also settles on the bottom of them on the top rack only.

I had the exact same problem with my Whirlpool Gold DW. The DW repair guy said it was us not rinsing the dishes properly before washing them. But we recently purchased a water softener and the problem slowly went away, and within a week and a half we had sparkling, grit-free glasses! We orginally got the water softener to get rid of the film on the glasses, but it also cleared up the grit problem as well.

It's really odd why our 10yr Maytag never gave us streaky or gritty dishes, but this new one did. Makes you think the older models had extra filtration system built-in.

If you have hard water deposits, you should really get a water softener anyways. It's nice to see all the shower and bath fixture nice and shiny once again!

Run your dishwasher through a rinse cycle using a teaspoon full of tang, the acidit acid will clean out the gunk in the system

Get you a bottle of Dishwasher Magic at Wal Mart and run this through. It will REALLY clean out your pump/arms/filter. Also do you use liquid or powder detergent? Powder is better for hard water so I have read. I would DEFINATELY get the DM and run through it. I used it every few months just to keep my machine clean.

I also had a similar problem with my KA DW for the whole first year.

Dishwasher Magic really helped. Also only using 1 TB of Cascade Complete (and keeping the JEt Dry holder full).
