New Appliances for Kitchen Renovation

We are re-doing our Kitchen and will need new appliances.

I'm looking for a French Door Refrigerator w/external ice/water (yes, I've seen stuff questioning their reliability), a Gas Range (single oven), Over the Range Microwave and Dishwasher.

I'd like to keep the appliance budget to under $5000 (shipped and taxed), if possible. I'm in New York State.

I could get it locally or would be willing to order online (I have enough lead time).

I do see that ajmadison.com and homeeverything.com are both in NY and will tax me, killing any advantages they have. I saw a few other online stores as well that I looked at briefly.

As far as brands, I'm pretty much open to anything. I think it might make the most sense to get all one brand from an aesthetic standpoint, but that's not a definite if a case could be made otherwise.

So....any suggestions on either brands/models or stores?

lexluthor, It appears I did something wrong. Try www.us-appliance.com. I purchased a cooktop and a micro wave drawer from them with no problems.

Another vote for Fisher Paykel. My favourite fridge ever. Something about their design makes them look "petite" but the simple streamlined interior can hold a ton. Once you narrow down your choices, pay close attention to the hinges on the doors. Hopefully someone else can chime in with a more technical description of the different types, but in a nutshell, some allow the edge door to tuck into itself while others swing out in a way that ends up requiring the fridge to be pulled out a few inches, or have a gap on either side, to avoid getting dented by the edge of the surrounding cabinetry or any corners of counter top sticking out nearby. We have an Electrolux french door right now that is like this. It is advertised as counter depth and should fit within our ample 30" lower cabs with room to spare, but in reality is has to be pulled out several inches. Looks terrible. If the corners of counter top next to the fridge were rounded off, it would be a bit better, but they're not. The Fisher Paykel did not have this problem and it tucked right in beautifully (sadly left behind in a previous house). It was dreamy for many other reasons as well.

Future_retiree - I respectfully accept your opinions about ranking for appliance purchases. However, regarding your comments on the cooktop and hood. It's not really my opinion - for the cooktop, it's geometry. Math. The OP is looking at a 30" cooktop which loses quite a number of inches and surface real estate to the knobs. The OP will have trouble with crowded pots on that surface. People sometimes complain that a 30" range is crowded, and a range doesn't even lose inches from knobs. That is why people often choose the 36" size. All anyone has to do is go to a shop and see these 30" cooktops in person. Many people bring their favorite pot and pan to test whether the surface area is adequate. You did not consider the space lost and loss of utility; all you said is the cooktop looks OK. I will reiterate what I said above - to solve the cooking area limitations of a 30" cooktop, the OP's alternatives are either to go to a wider 36" cooktop, or if 30" cannot be changed, go to a 30" rangetop. Regarding the hood, you made no mention of its mesh filters which do not function as well as baffle filters. Nor the fact that the flat shape will not provide the capture that a canopy-shaped hood would. That is physics, not my opinion.

Ok Sophie, but I did the diagram and maths and it looks like it would fit. Was hoping I would get an answer from someone with experience that could verify, unfortunately your answer has no maths behind it... The ikea cabinet is 30 1/16"to from bottom shelf to countertop, our countertop is 1 3/16"thick, so we have 31 1/4" from the bottom of the cabinet to the top of the countertop. Now the samsung oven is 27 1/5" high, and the bosch cooktop is 4" down from the top of the countertop BUT thats including the conduit fitting which is 1" thick and actually sits behind the recessed portion of the oven which is inches lower, so in essence the cooktop is 3 1/4" thick leaving me with 31 1/4" - (27 1/5" + 3 1/4") = approx 1" of clearance between appliances...would be interested to why you don't think they'll fit

Microwave need - very important. When putting a countertop unit in a cabinet keep this in mind. These micros have a vent on one side (discharge of the magnetron motor heat). This side requires at least 5 inches of "open space". The unit's motor fan keeps running after use - so please, no cabinet door. Ignoring these requirements will cause the unit to die rather quickly.

I did see that site and that might be my #1 option if I got the internet order route.

Still looking for some assistance on brands/models. It's really an open slate as long as it's around the $5000 budget.

Just because an out-of-state vendor doesn't charge you sales tax doesn't mean you're not ultimately liable for paying it.

How's the Jenn-Air stuff? I can put together a Jenn-Air package with their Euro-Stainless line that's in my budget. They currently appear to have a $500 rebate with the purchase of 4 appliances, so that's what gets it into the budget range. Seems like for about the same price as the GE Profile, I'm getting a little more (like convection oven, nicer dishwasher). I figure Jenn-Air with a $500 rebate is a better deal than say Whirlpool, which has no current rebate.

I have a Jenn Air French door, cabinet depth fridge in the white glass finish. It's beautiful. It does not have ice/water on the outside, though; the water is inside and you get the ice the old fashioned way out of the freezer.

I have been happy with its operation over the past 18 months or so, no complaints, and I really like the cabinet depth because it makes everything easier for me to find - no more mystery items hidden at the back. ;)
