Saw 13 snakes today!

Today in 2 1/2 hours, I found:

7 Eastern Yellowbelly Racers

4 Intergrade Eastern/Red-Sided Garter Snakes

2 Black Rat Snakes (one monster in the 5 foot plus category).

All snakes were found with the walk and observe method except one garter found under a log.

Also saw 4 bald eagles.

Not bad for a late November walk.

Being a Texas gal I am not a stranger to nasty snakes. But they are not all nasty. Last year I was on the deck watering and heard a heck of a commotion. Looking toward the flap flap flap sound I saw a terrified snake that had been napping in the cool moisture spot where my water hose hooks to the faucet and drips a bit. He was so big and he was pushing off...his body spread out to get a good start. When he got straigthened out he slid over my other deck in a straight path and was gone from sight. I'm not going to flirt with snakes. But he was so terrified it almost made me feel sorry for messing up his nap. I said almost!

Today I found 5 Garter Snakes and 1 Northern Water Snake basking outside two dens. The Northern Water Snake was the same one I saw on January 1st and again on January 8th. I have seen it on all three of my herp outings in the New Year. These were my first Garter Snakes of the new year.

Nice job Wayne! There's a large piece of tin at an area where I'm still waiting to find something under it also. After you finally found a Copperhead underneath that rock, now I feel like checking that tin out!

Great day Wayne!

Maybe it is still too soon to add up the years totals!

My last significant find was a very fresh DOR coachwhip. It was found November 5th. It measured 44 inches and was almost completely black except for a few tiny specks of brown back by the tail. Only good thing about finding any DOR is the chance to examine it and look at the complete snake. Sad to find such an impressive snake only a couple hundred feet from my front yard!

Gary,

That's an interesting November DOR find. Too bad it was DOR. I love Missouri coachwhips. Until I'd seen a live one in the wild this spring, I had no idea how gorgeous the black phase coachwhips are.
