Not a big find but I'll take anything this time of the year. My daughter has half a dozen chickens for a school project and the snake was found inside the pen where they are kept. Lucky for the snake that we found it before the chickens did. I really think that chickens do as much damage as feral cats or any cat for that matter. Twice last year I saw a chicken with a small snake in its beak. They killed a vole and several mice in their pen and they also like skinks. We rescued a brown snake last year that was completely limp and hurt. Quite a sight with my kids chasing the chicken and yelling, drop that snake! It was a gravid female so we kept it for a few days and it recovered and gave birth. Needless to say the chickens no longer roam free here.

Also found a total of 4 snakes in our yard for the month of June. Another green snake, black rat snake, earth snake and a garter snake.

The adult black rat snake was found about 15 feet up in a large lone oak tree in our backyard. My sons heard two blue-jays making a lot of noise and after a while looked up and saw the snake. They watched it for some time before it slowly came down the tree and then quickly took off for the pasture. I have always been amazed at how many snakes we see each year crossing our lawn, I guess it's no different then crossing a road. They just seem so exposed when they do that.
