Their color varies from location to location, but the spots and the stripe on the ridge are leopard frog.

Thanks. Both northern and southern leopard frogs have been found in my area of southeastern PA. Might it be possible to determine the species from the picture?

Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens): Brown or green; large, LIGHT-EDGED DARK SPOTS BETWEEN LIGHT-COLOR DORSOLATERAL RIDGES - ridges continuous to groin; upper jaw stripe; NO SPOT ON EAR DRUM.

Southern Leopard Frog (Rana utricularia): Green to brown; LARGE DARK SPOTS BETWEEN LIGHT-COLOR DORSOLATERAL RIDGES - ridges continuous to groin; upper jaw stripe; A LIGHT SPOT IN CENTER OF EAR DRUM.

The dark spots seem to have a light fringe, so I'd say "Northern". It's a very confusing family.

Thanks for the info. It certainly is a confusing family. I've seen pictures labeled either northern or southern that indicated characteristics of the other. If only I'd stooped a little lower we'd have a clear view of the ear drum, but a Northern it does seem most likely to be.

That's actually a Pickerel Frog (Rana palustris) - the golden coloration, square dorsal markings, and thick dorsolateral folds are very indicative of the species. I'm sure if you had another angle you'd see the orangish coloration on the thighs.

That certainly seems like a reasonable opinion, depending upon how square 'square' has to be. Given the fact that the Pickerel Frog is labeled as being 'abundant' in PA, and the Leopard Frog is a 'species of special concern', and I really can't remember if it was longer than 3", I'd say the probability is that you're right.
