garter snake behavior

I live in southeastern Colorado above 7500 feet. My guinea hen spotted a snake in the grass yesterday and looked at it for the longest time. It didn't bother it, surprisingly, and when I went over to look at it, it coiled back upon itself and struck at me and then my dog. I figured it was a garter snake. I couldn't get a picture, because by the time I got in to get my camera it was gone. It was about a 15 inches long and sort of dusky-checkered looking. I looked in the reptile guide I have and it says we don't have the checkered garter snake in Colorado. My husband thinks it could have been a rattlesnake. It didn't have a rattle on its tail, but I was surprised it struck at me while I was standing quite a ways away. Will garter snakes exhibit that kind of behavior?
