Elly: Boy, do I feel your pain...I have two kitties who are subject to crystals, one more than the other. I've been through the antibiotics, the prescription food...the one girl got so sick of the vets prodding and squeezing her trying to get a urine sample that she's become one of the "needs gloves" cats :( But, I think I'm finally on course for what works. Opie (the one with the more serious problem) gets strictly wet food twice a day (half a can each time). I mix in about 2 tablespoons of water, and sort of mash it into a soup. I also add a Cosequin tablet to the 'soup' once a day (the vet recommended the Cosequin to help with bladder spasms). Since I've been doing this, she hasn't had a recurrance of the crystals. The other kitty gets the wet food/water/Cosequin once a day, and she's doing well on that. I tried the prescription food (wet and dry). She only ate one flavor of the wet food, and she would consistantly throw up the dry food (I think it was too oily for her system). I now solely feed her the Friskies Special Diet wet food (she occasionally gets a few 'crunchies' that the other kitties have left in their bowls, but never more than a few). It's specially made for UTI-prone cats. I've tried different dry foods, all low in ash and magnesium, some specially made for crystals, etc., but nothing worked until I went strictly to the wet food. Sure, it's expensive compared to dry, but everything will even out in terms of lack of vet bills and medicine. Plus, she's not hurting anymore. I've rambled on a whole lot, but I hope this helps. I've decided to transform the leaf mould bin into a compost bin sooner rather than later. Instead of emptying out all of the leaves, I've started incorporating grass clippings and kitchen/garden scraps into the bin, making sure it gets a good green/brown ratio. Over time, by turning the existing brown materials in with the new green materials, it should make good compost. The negative about this is that I won't be able to use this stuff for about two years, when I could have actually collected leaf mould in one year. The positive is that compost is more nutrient rich but can also be used the same way, as a top dressing or mulch, for water retention and weed suppression, but giving those plants a boost that leaf mould may not do. I'll work green materials in for about a year (or unless we get it so full that it absolutely can't hold any more) then setup another swimming pool composter up. On appx April 2018, the plan is to collect compost from the first bin. On appx April 2019, I'll collect compost from the 2nd bin. Then, April 2020, from the first bin, and on and on. Meanwhile, I'm slowly building up a small farm, with rabbits, cows, chickens, and eventually, ducks, possibly turkeys, etc. Rabbit poop = instant garden fertilizer + worm food, for vermicomposting, to collect worm castings for the garden, and the worms themselves could feed some fish, for a future aquaponics setup. Cow, chicken, duck, and turkey poop will be composted. As of right now, it's all about slowly moving forward, to try to obtain a balance, where everything works together.
