Trip Report: Wading among the Cottonmouths!

Herpfriend (Bob) asked Rachel and I if we wanted to wade a clear Ozark stream at night and look for Cottonmouths. No sane person would turn down the offer to get in the water at night and wade among water moccasins so naturally we accepted the generous offer. We used flashlights or head lamps and waded the middle of the creek while shining the light toward the shorelines. The water was ankle deep to a little over knee deep along the way. There were some waist deep holes but we avoided those. Footing in the creek was very slippery in places and avoiding falling was a real challenge.

Beyond the prospect of seeing snakes, the walk was also very enjoyable because you can see a bunch of crayfish and small fish such as madtoms, shiners, suckers, sculpins, longear sunfish and smallmouth bass swim between and around you while you are wading. Whatsmore no ticks, no chiggers and no mosquitoes!

We found our first snake about 15 minutes into the wade, before the sun had set. Around 8:30 or so as we were walking in one of the deeper holes I spotted a 20 inch cottonmouth at the shore line. Our trip was a success just minutes in! We waded one direction until about 9:30 without seeing any further snakes and then came back the other way.

Around 10:30 or so at a deep pool where one shore is rocky bluff with holes (a likely den site) a very large cottonmouth that was along the opposite shore from the rocky cliff swam out from the shore and crossed just a few feet right in front of us while gliding an elegant retreat towards the bluff. It was a very big cottonmouth in the 3 foot plus range and when it reached the other shore it swam along the shore looking for holes in the bluff to hide in. It eventually found one and climbed into the hole. It was really neat to see such a large snake glide high atop a clear flowing stream.

About five to ten minutes later Bob called out to Rachel and said "you just passed one." There to the right of Rachel was a 22 inch cottonmouth calmly sitting atop the surface of a still pool.

Another ten minutes later and I spotted a small 16 inch northern water snake as it went rippling past Bob and Rachel. It stayed near the surface for a little bit then turned towards Bob's headlamp and backed beneath the water surface and then swam away under water.

We were out of the water and on our way back to mid-Missouri by 11PM.

Thanks to Bob for showing us around! He was a great guide to our stream cottonmouth habitat. It was a real treat to see cottonmouths glide on a clear stream at night and to see all the other neat animals that shared their habitat niche.

Snake total for the evening: 3 Western Cottonmouths, 1 Northern Water Snake
