You can buy covers for your window wells at Home Depot or Lowes - they are these large plastic bubble-looking things...that should keep most of the toads out. Make sure you remove the toads and all over debris from the wells before you put the cover on...and it'd probably be a good idea to put a nice layer of pea gravel down there too. ~Mike

How much would be involved in sticking in a metal window well? An excellent idea. Otherwise, over time, the soil will collapse in on the hole. However, you should dig down at least another foot below the window, fit in a well and fill the hole with gravel. That will give any water that does go into the well a place to disperse. You should attach the well to the house foundation. Just use masonry bits and plastic or lead anchors. If you don't attach it to the house, soil and excess water will leak in between the metal well and the house. If you truly can't use a drill and work bothers you, forget it, relax, have another beer!

There are no 'survivors'. I'm sure I could go out and FIND some more varmints somewhere in the woods and creek that adjoin our house. Folks, these are PESTS, not your child's pet hamster or your dog or cat. Would you 'save' mice in your attic? Would you be happy to take delivery of a box of shrews? Would you 'free' them to die *somewhere else*? (Owl, snake, coyote, cat, etc.) I *have* 'rescued' toads that fell into the window well, but they are not in the 'pest' category. I will screen the window well. Mice, shrews, etc. will still be out there, perishing, but somewhere else, out of sight. I'm sorry I posted. I was just astounded! I didn't mean to upset y'all.
