Can you mark a wild box turtle?

Five years ago a box turtle laid eggs in our yard, and the next year we found a hatchling. It's stuck around - disappearing sometimes for long stretches, but always showing back up. Since we don't try to keep it confined in our yard, we're worried an uneducated person might come across it and take it out of the wild for a pet. Is there a safe way to mark it (maybe with our address) so at least someone would return it rather than keeping it? Since we live in a residential area, it's a miracle this hasn't already happened (or that he hasn't been run over).

Thanks,

Tim
