Sorry for lousy pics...window was really dirty! Arrghhh! Anyhow upped the contrast to clear as much as possible.

That is an adult Sharp-shinned hawk. Not a falcon. Beautiful bird, but he's missing some primaries on his left wing.

It does look better from the outside than from the inside. In L.A., it would be a party house, for week-end rentals only - I've been to some in Malibu like that. I could also see it as part of a set for a James Bond movie. I would never live in Arizona, but I do like to visit friends in Tuscon. Utah is beautiful too, but I could never live there either, although I do like to visit.

Using your genus tip I think it might be Hypericum punctatum (Spotted St. John's-wort). Also looked at H. mutilum and H. boreale but the leaves seemed too small.

The 2nd one looks like a Plectranthus. I don't know which species turns red in tons of sun, maybe neochilius. Are you able to add a closer pic of the bloom? The first one gave me a Plectranthus vibe too, but could be something in Crassulaceae. Is it fuzzy?

Hi, Elly What were the field marks that convinced you it was a Sharp-shinned and not a Cooper's? Just curious. We have both around here and I'm trying to become more adept at making the distinction. -Pat

This size of its head in relation to its body (small, bullet head) and the large eyes and beak in that small head. Also, the bird is overall more diminutive than a Cooper's.
