water snakes

My Mom lives on a lake in upstate NY and is having multiple snake encounters in the water area. Is there any way to repel or deter the snakes so that she may again enjoy the water?! I saw an ad for a Sentinel solar powered snake repeller and dont want to waste my time or money if it is ineffective. She has already used snake away repellant on the land but they keep hanging out at her dock!!

Unfortunately for folks who would like to keep snakes away from their living quarters, there are no effective snake repellants (I have my doubts about the effectiveness of Snake-A-Way too). The best ways to limit the occurence of snakes in an area are to reduce their habitat and prey but that isn't possible (or desirable) when the habitat is a lake.

There are no venomous water snakes in upstate NY and the snakes are almost certainly harmless Northern Water Snakes so she should take at least some comfort in the fact that they are harmless. But, of course, I realize that for most folks the fact that a snake is known to be harmless is of only little comfort if they are startled and frightened by all snakes.

Thank you Wayne mo, I thought that might be the case but hoped I was wrong!!! Im glad that they are " harmless" to us ...physically!!!

I'm in the same boat as you. This sans watering thing can get complicated. There's just so much information out there. My mother has the really common sans you see in stores all the time. It is in a glazed, six inch pot about a foot away from a south window. She says she waters hers about every 7 or 14 days. She doesn't keep track strictly. Just when it's dry. It's been growing like crazy over the past two years. I have some sans too. Four types. They have been doing pretty well for me all spring. I have decided to let the soil dry all the way through then wait a few more days, and then water. Right now they are in 3 - 4 inch pots. I have been watering probably every 9 or 10 days. That's only because they're growing right now though. When they go dormant, or stop growing for a time, I will wait until the leaves become slightly wilty or bendy.

I'd say yes and they love koi ponds. Here in FL, it's kinda "cool" to have a koi pond. A woman in my neighborhood has one (3' x 6'). She told me that for several nights in a row she had seen a snake near the pond and that her fish were disappearing, and she had hired a "reptile pest controller" for $300 who came out and placed mothballs around the pond to scare away what he identified as a "cottonmouth viper". She came to me in tears a few days later. The mothballs killed off the rest of the koi and the snake was still there. I went right over and found a Florida Banded Water snake coiled up near the pond, picked it up and relocated it to my property.

If they were Banded Water Snakes, the orangish phase in them is gorgeous. Adding to their vulnerability at night is that it is also cooler.
