Hi, if there is a more appropriate forum for me to visit for information I would appreciate being directed there. Meanwhile if anyone here can help that would be great. Yesterday morning I was on my lawn in a small area that I had patched with cow manure and grass seed.. There was a slight hole and some small pieces of an animal, not fur or identifiable body parts, more like innards, very small. I cleaned up and repatched.

This morning on another area also where I had patched I found a larger hole with a lot of dirt thrown out and again some some pieces of body parts, nothing identifiable. A few feet away, though, there was the intestine (I think) stretched out in a straight line, probably 2 or 3 feet long. It smelled very bad. i didn't see any blood, fur, feathers, limbs or anything identifiable. Is there any way to tell what animal might have done this? I took pictures but I don't know how that would be helpful. If anyone thinks it might help to see them i will post. thanks.

Perhaps a cat unearthing a mole, vole, or other?

Hi Rhizo, I have been trying to trap a feral cat recently, but I haven't seen her in a month or so. Maybe she is leaving my food for live game, it's possible. I have read, contrary to what has been posted on the forums, that cats are messy about their kills. As I said there was hardly anything left behind. Do you know which is more true? I know it's hard to say what happened with so little to go on but I'm curious.

Better a dead rat than a live one. I always kick or thump the compost bin a couple of times, then wait a moment to let any inhabitants know I'm coming before I take off the lid. I've been surprised in the past.... Serpiously though, I wouldn't worry about it. Rinse off your produce before you eat it. You are in more danger from supermarket stuff. How do you know that the last person who touched that apple washed their hands after using the restroom?

We had the same problem in our last home and my parents had it in their current home. Ours, we believe was a small rodent that got caught up in the insulation and died. My parents had a dead squirrel in their wall. The odor we had was near an outside wall in the laundry room. I would not smell it until mid to late afternoon, when the sun hit that side of the house. It lasted for weeks! My parents had a horrible time, because the squirrel died inside their wall between two rooms. It put off a very nauseous odor, so they had to put out all kinds of air fresheners until it decomposed. Yuck!

From the strange but true file... I had a customer bring her Buick Riviera in for a bad odor inside the car, dang I just realized this was almost twenty years ago... VBG.... Anyway, it was such a foul odor, and so strong it would make everyone that got into the car start to get sick. The only solution since the odor was everywhere was to quickly pull out the back seat, and the deck tray to improve air flow all the way through the interior of car. This allowed first of all me to even be in the car investigating the problem, and of course it thinned the odor down enough that we could start to isolate it's source. Turns out the amplifier for the LR speaker was failing, and the potting material was "cooking" but had not yet as yet started to burn. Which brings me to what kim needs to do. Get the car siting open, with fans blowing air through the car to cut the smell down, then stop the airflow and you should be able to narrow down where the odor is coming from.

I'm just theorizing, but if the cat was able to dig out a mole/mole/shrew from the ground, she might take it off elsewhere to eat.

HI again, I was talking to the woman who deals with the feral cat colonies about this. She thinks maybe a coyote or a fox could have done such a complete job of devouring a small animal. MY neighbor did tell me that there was a coyote on the next block a few weeks back.

My cat used to eat rats or voles all except part of the intestine. Sometimes I would also find the feet or tail.
