Hmmm. There are several plants that go by the common name "hummingbird bush", but Clethra alnifolia isn't one of them. "Summersweet" is the name that most nurseries would use for C. alnifolia. Could you be referring to Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird' -- the semi-dwarf form of summersweet with white flowers? In any event, I wouldn't expect to see them for sale in SoCal. There are two plants that go by the common name of hummingbird vine. One is the trumpet vine (Campsis radicans). It's extremely tough and would be capable of moving roofing. It's deciduous but comes back from the wood. The other is the Cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit). It's either a tender perennial down south or a freely reseeding annual where hard freezes occur. It has a fern-like appearance to the foliage. Very rapid growth but I would doubt it's ability to dig into physical structures as it is not woody. Both are hummingbird magnets.
