amazing osprey

My husband and I recently built a home on a large lake. The lake is owned by my husband and his father so we are fortunate enough to be the only home on or anywhere near the lake. We have discovered that we have a pair of osprey that live on our lake. We are so excited! They are a rare species in Indiana, although many were recently released as part of a program to help increase their population in Indiana. My father in law says that they have been here for many years and they he has watched them for a long time but did not know what they were. We haven't been living on the lake long enough to know how much of the year they spend here or if they are nesting here. They are amazing watch as they dive into the water to catch fish. Has anyone else ever seen these amazing birds hunt?

I have a picture of one coming out of the water with a fish it is amazing to watch.. you are very lucky...I have a Redtail Hawk pair that I was able to watch this spring and summer... they young RT has since taken off but it was a very exciting encounter...Claire

Lucky you! I am in Michigan. The Osprey that visit us arrive in the early spring and leave in the fall. They migrate a very long distance, some as far as South America each year. plants 77 Yes pseudostuga menziesii does very well in Britain also pseudotsuga menziezii v glauca does well in most parts of uk.I also have the Mexican p lyndliana here and its doing fine.P sinensis does not do well here summers are not hot enough. High altitude forms would do well in Britain.All plants grown from low altitude seed.

Yep, three eggs now. The site said the third egg was first observed on the 30th so it would seem they don't lay their eggs all at once. I was wondering how long before we see chicks too, so I looked it up & it takes 5-6 weeks of incubation before the eggs hatch. If the first egg arrived around the 23rd of April (according to the Wood's Hole site), we should start looking around May 27th. The eggs will hatch in the order in which they were laid. Dad's helping out too. I think I saw him bring a peice of food back, but it was unidentifiable. I've also seen them switch off for sitting on the eggs. They had a peice of paper that they were using as a blanket for awhile. They would place it over the eggs while stretching their legs and then tuck it around their breast while sitting. Nice! I love those guys. That bird is a male (he lacks the "necklace" females have, unless I am missing it), and he is at least 1 year old, because I see his tail is in a molt. We just had a brood of nine ducklings pull from a sewer drain last weekend. Below is a pic of the officer who rescued them. The sanctuary is about a ten minute drive from my home. It's open from dawn to dusk, though I've been there a few times after dark on bat walks and such. It's very cool to be there at dust with hundreds of crows come in for the evening to sleep. We have a lot of osprey in Maryland and I have been lucky enough to see them hunting. When I use to go fishing at an Ocean City, Maryland on a regular basis I would see ospreys quite a bit. Lots of the buoys would have osprey nests on them. Several times I got too close to the nests and the ospreys would let me hear about it.

In the passed few weeks, I have spotted an osprey several times on the lake where my house is. I live in eastern Massachusetts, so I'm sure it's just passing through on it's way south. I'm less than a mile from a major shopping area, so I was surprised, but pleased to see it. Two years ago we had a bald eagle come through as well.
