Yes, we do have toads in the garden - I've never come across baby ones, though. Last winter, I neglected to keep a hole in the ice over the little pond adjacent to our patio, which caused all of the larger mongrel goldfish to perish. I suspect that this provided the conditions for successful amphibian procreation. We did have a singing toad at that pond in spring, haven't noticed any since then.

The promised storms started at 1:07AM. I don't know what happened, other than thunder, because I didn't hear a thing after that. This afternoon another torrential downpour, with some interesting clouds in the north-east: And then a gorgeous sunset. I hope that 'red sky at night ...' saying holds true for tomorrow's forecast. But would maggots be around after 2 days? Usually they'd leave their food and pupate and not linger. These guys look like they left their food and...hung around? Or there could be fresh ones every day. Look for something rotting or otherwise edible nearby. :) I'd ignore them though. Well, I wouldn't because I'd be curious too, but I wouldn't try to kill them.
