Red headed skinks

I have tried to find something or some way in order to get rid of these scary things. I am deathly afraid of these lizards, they alway look like snakes at first glance. I love working outside, but these lizards keeps me inside. I just want them gone. Any ideas, open for suggestion

C'mon, they're harmless. I'd google a bunch of sites that describe skinks and overdose on seeing them and reading about them, then they won't be as scary. They're more afraid of you. Let us know when you're cured.

I can understand being frightened by those skinks. However, as long as the habitat suits them they will be there. It seems you are more scared of them because they look like snakes than because they are skinks. Where do you live? Are there any venomous snakes in your area? Is there any real danger from snakes in your area?

If you have to live with them I would not let that get in the way of enjoying the outdoors. Skinks are inoffensive creatures and not capable of doing any harm to you. May I suggest trying to get to know them? I know this may seem unthinkable now, but maybe you can find someone to teach you. Perhaps one day you may even touch one!

Thanks everybody!! Marci, I killed the my first Haraella in nothing flat. I fried the poor little thing in our famous Florida sun. Back then I thought everything was a Vanda....;0( I got this one from Oak Hill a while back and mounted it. I've kept it in the same light as I keep my phals and it took off in no time. It gets soaked once a day and if it is really hot I mist it in the afternoon. smwboxer ...I am so glad this sent you off to Andy's - my work here is done.....LOL Thanks again guys!!

hi nature, I have squirrels galore cuz I have food and water and shelter in my yard. You can plant berry producing shrubs, put out bird baths for water, certainly a squirrel feeder and bird feeder. You could also provide squirrel nesting boxes. As for skinks and snakes, I will let someone else comment on them but I believe they love stones and logs. I have a snake that comes to my garden every couple of days from the field across the street to hunt for lizards. Check out National Wildlife web site and look at the back yard habitat link. michelle

don't know about your woodpeckers but i have a pair of lewis's woodpeckers who have nested here last 3 years. i also have lots of orioles and i put out fruit and jelly and watermelon for the orioles, the young Lewis's love the jelly and watermelon and eat lots of fruit and they come back every year. i also have downeys and hairys and flickers that use the same feeders as the Lewis's

Well, I'm not sure how kind I really am, maybe it's more because of finding out what the critter eats and knowing it's more beneficial all around to release it which leaves me basically as selfish as they come. We did have a bit of fun, my GKs came over and got to see it and then saw it disappear when it was released. DD and I decided to do this because this is only the 2nd time we've ever seen one and they may never see one in the wild again. So maybe you're right, ILuvGinger, and the best interests of the lizard were paramount in the long run. I have this sneaking suspiscion that what's best for Mama Nature's creatures in the wild is best for all creatures including us. When I finally realized that we are truly a part of nature and not apart from nature my outlook on many things changed. Thanks for your kind words, no matter how we view things from our own perspective it's nice to know when others notice. You reminded of my little visitor and the joy he (she? it?) brought and made me smile. I hope you're having a wonderful day, you just made mine better. :o)color>

The males (which have the red heads) are somewhat unattractive to most people, but the juveniles and females of the broad-headed skink and other similar species are AMAZINGLY beautiful with brilliant blue tails!!! If I didn't have these beauties on my property I would be willing to work very hard or pay lots of money to get them. I love them!! They literally inspire me with their color and speed as they streak around my place. I saw a young wild one at a zoo once that happened into the lion cage and decided it was my favorite animal at the zoo.
But that's just me.

Santee2go....it's true....knowledge and information will be the key to your freedom from fear. It worked on me with spiders! I an highly tolerent of those critters now.
