Black lizards in Florida

We live in south Florida, where lizards are all over the place and nobody even notices them much. My daughter was told by her friend's parents that the black lizards bite. It seems ridiculous and I researched it and see no evidence of it. I imagine any of these lizards would bite if they had to, but is there a breed of black lizard in Florida that's dangerous? Or is this just some creepy backward southern urban legend?

Oddly enough, I heard a similar tale from a relative in Florida; it seems to be nothing more than an urban legend.

As you suspected, many (most) species of lizards will indeed bite if they are cornered or picked up, but there are no venomous species in Florida (or the eastern United States).

Shinol01. I've seen several of your posts since 2008 regarding your Bambusa Lako. See you haven't posted anything in a while, but I'm really curious as to how they are doing 9 years later. Have you see these planted beach side or ocean front? I'm wondering how tolerant they are to high winds and salt spray. We live in Melbourne Beach, just two minutes north of the Sebastian Inlet. "Florida's version of black ice" happens anywhere and everywhere right after the first rain of the season, or after any rain when there hasn't been rain for a while. It's not a phenomenon specific to Florida. The only difference, perhaps, is that Florida is more likely to experience this in the summer months, whereas California (for example) is more likely to experience this in the Fall and Winter.

We have a bunch of them around the retention pond at work, West palm Beach. I think they eat insects & such. Pretty cool looking but another invasive critter.
