help identifying hawk - no pic

I have been seeing a hawk by my house and I'm hoping you all can help me ID it. It is a light gray, about the size of a crow. When flying, tail is totally straight out (no fanning). Underside when flying is very light, almost looking white. End of tail is a stripe of white, then a pronounced stripe of black. It has been flying around today, calling out... a two syllable sort of shriek. Last night I watched it flying around some evergreen trees, diving around them actually, but I couldn't see what it was after. Today I heard it crying out, then it landed in the top of a tree. Then I saw another hawk flying farther away. Could it be looking for a mate? Anyway, any help at identifying would be appreciated. Everytime I try to go get the camera, it leaves.
