blazepepper I refer to the link below (PDF file) quite often to help me decide when to plant things. You're quite right. The time is approaching when we can plant some things as long as we use our common sense. Most of the early Springsters must be planted as seeds, though asparagus is almost always bought as plants. Many brassica seeds (cabbage, kale, broccoli, etc.) can be started soon. You can plant onion starts or seeds. I don't know how much frost or freezing the young starts can take since they have to spend some energy rooting before they start growing, but the seeds will come up with enough light, some warmth, and moisture, and once they're up, they're pretty hardy against everything but hard freezes. You can plant English peas soon, as well as lettuce. Take a look at the chart below. It'll give you some information about what you can plant when. There's definitely a yin-yang to the opinions about BS ranges on this forum. Be sure to spend some time looking over some of the countless threads here. Most are tremendously happy with the high BTU capacity etc, but opinions are much more divided on quality of construction, igniter problems, and customer service which has apparently ranged from terrible to outstanding. Sounds like since the addition of the white glove service many issues are better now. There was also a thread questioning the financial stability of the company, but many who appear to have information posted to contradict that. Just do your due diligence. I did just check the website: it was the Guy Gunter dealership that I had contacted and which gave me such minimal interest. Perhaps that's changed. you say that Opalika is the best type of Roma tom? **** It's Opalka and no it isn't a roma type; it's a long red type that's excellent for sauces and also fresh eating; very few seeds. Kind of like roma types in that they're small and red and very meaty that I think are excellent are: Heidi Martino's Roma Wuhib I know Heidi is one of Darrel's faves, he of selected plants mentioned above. he sells only plants, not seeds. There are many threads here at GW that mention good seed sources, just use the Search feature at the bottom of this page. If you don't find it I'll suggest a few places. YOu might wish to go to Sandhillpreservation.com and look in the tomato section for the heading Paste Tomatoes and take a look if you want to see LOTS of varieties. Speaking for myself now, if you're going to grow stuff for sauce, why not consider using just great tasting meaty larger varieties since as a group, the paste tomatoes aren't all that flavorful IMO.
