Thanks to Shady Oak BF Farm i found it and was able to find something for him to eat. He is a salt marsh or acrea moth. thanks everyone! Here is a link that might be useful: Acrea moth

Thanks guys! I think it is H. gallii. There is another photo of the top of the wings that I didn't post because it's kind of fuzzy, but from what you can see of the wings it looks just like the picture on the link. That is a great website! And it's a pretty moth. The caterpillar is so interesting-looking. I wonder what they have used as a host plant here. Coincidentally, I started some Epilobium angustifolium from seed, but the plants are small because they're still in 16 oz cups waiting to be planted out. From what I understand this is an aggressive spreader and their bed isn't prepped yet.

Can you take a pic & post it? Maybe someone could identify it & give you some advice. Otherwise, I'd call the Extension service about this.

What's your location? Makes a big difference, in some instances. Oops, I see that you are in the UK. You good people have more of the tent making caterpillars than we do! I'm in agreement with Larry that it resembles some of the tent caterpillars that we have in the states. This post was edited by rhizo_1 on Fri, Aug 29, 14 at 15:19
