I'm no bird expert by any means but it looks a lot like a young Red-tailed Hawk. We have a family of them living here and they do wonders at keeping little critters out of the hostas for me so hopefully your new little friend will stay around and help you with your gardens too.

No she was driven out by this pair just about 2 1/2 years ago... The female does not want anything to do with me but the Male he is pretty mello and lets me come right up to him... Last year the pair did not produce, and this year I believe they had two but I have a picture of the female and she has something in her mouth by the neck and it has yellow feet, so I think that one young one did not survive and she took it out of the nest.. I have so many pictures...lol Claire

This is a classic first-year redtail, a male. The small head and short bill makes it a male. And yes, it just had a fine feast. The crop is filled and the bird is conveniently perched in a calm digestion mode. Notice that the right foot is drawn up and slighly clinched. The bird is completely satisfied. An adult bird has enough experience and sense not to park itself on such a low perch. An adult would fly off and take a similar pose on a distant high branch of a remote tree. But this youngster is quite satisfied with its hunting prowess, even if it has chosen a crude perch. This bird is likely to survive the winter and enter the breeding population in a few years. Only one out of five young redtails are able to survive to breeding age. This fellow may make it. (I train and hunt with redtails and know them extensively. There is no doubt about this bird.)
