Smooth Greens in Chicago City Limits!

I decided to head south today at about 3:30 and took the left road instead of the right road when the highways split to go to Kankakee. Immediatley after the split I saw a sign for a Forest Preserve, so I exited. Right after the exit there was a grassy area leading up to the railroad tracks with a pull off. So I drove right in.

I hopped out and flipped a couple logs and immediatley found a Brown Snake. I was surprised to see anything in that I was still in the Chicago city limits, and right next to a busy highway. I found a couple piles of shingles and started to find Chicago and Plains Garters by the dozen along with more Brown Snakes. In the second pile I uncovered a subadult Smooth Green Snake! I checked around a bit more and flipped a mudflap right under the highway to uncover 2 adult Smooth Greens, about 15 Plains and Chicago garters, and 4 or 5 Brown Snakes. I was very surprised to say the least. Smooth Greens have become very rare around Chicago and this was only the fourth population I have ever seen in Cook County.

Checking my map I found I was just north of Dolton, where teh train tracks led to. Dolton is one of only three locations that Black Rat Snakes are on record for Northeastern IL. I look forward to seeing if I can locate any. If Smooth Greens are still around, it's likely that Black Rats may be as well.
