What kind of snake is this? South-Central Texas

Does anyone know what kind of snake this is? I believe I stumbled upon a den of snakes while the mother is away right outside of my front door where I have flowers bordering the side of the house.... it is burrowed deep in a hole in the dirt against the side of the porch. I live in the San Antonio area, which is south central Texas. There is a small lake nearby.... about 400 yards away.

That is a Checkered Gartersnake (Thamnophis marcianus). It is completely harmless.
Snakes don't really den here in San Antonio (where I also live), but it isn't uncommon to find several Checkered Gartersnakes together, particularly at this time of year when they are searching for mates. The larger ones are the females.
They are very common "yard snakes" in SATX.

But not in a good way because I Am too often guilty of quick glance impulse

With a bit of cover...and your fingers crossed...some of the smaller cherry/grape tomatoes can produce during the hell heat of mid-summer. It may or may not be worth the trouble depending on how badly you want some small fruited tomatoes. Fall tomatoes are generally a lot more productive than the spring-into-summer crops in the hotter areas, but both can be done as long as full-on summer doesn't creep up on you in early May.

@wantonamara - At this point in time there is a burn ban in effect in the Kerrville area, as there is over a large part of the state. That doesn't preclude a bar-b-que pit, though. Thank goodness. =) @soxxxx - There are numerous motels, in various price ranges, within 10 miles of our place.

Jonesella - NO! Not poisonous. They will bite if you pick them up wrong, and it hurts, but they have no venom. Racers eat rodents and insects and small birds. Good things to have around your landscape. Not so good around a chicken coop if you have tiny chicks, but you can use screens and keep them out until the chicks are bigger.

Definitely not a pygmy rattlesnake. What you have there is a black ratsnake (Pantherophis [Elaphe] obsoleta). That is a hatchling or juvenile (as evidenced by its vivid pattern). They're harmless animals and actually good to have around as they eat a number of rodent species...granted they also are quite fond of birds. The way you described as finding is also very typical of the species, as black rats are highly arboreal. ~Mike
