Garter Snake in Cold Snap & Snow?

A few days ago while walking in the woods with my camera on a warm day I encountered a nice little garter snake out in the sun. I took some photos of it. A couple days later a nasty snowstorm blew in and covered the ground with 6" of wet heavy snow. Now it has turned cold and everything is frozen and wintery again.

Do snakes ever die when conditions suddenly turn cold like that?

I ask because I also saw a dead frog in a nearby woodland pool which shows that herptiles are not invulnerable to harm....
