We were sitting out last evening grilling and we heard a very strange bird singing that we had no idea what it was. I never thought of recording it. It was very loud but we never saw it. We have so many huge trees around the house it was well hidden. I will try to remember to record it on my phone.

No sighting, but both my brother & I in rural settings have recently (so it's resident, not migratory) heard this bird just as getting dark or dark. It's loud & goes in an increasing rate: Owwww...............owwww...........owwww.........owww........oww.......oww......oww.....oww....oww...ow..ow.ow.ow.ow.ow. Almost certain it's not any species of owl or grouse. Seems to come from near ground level.

I second the Merlin app! It's pretty amazing. It lists what it hears, and then highlights the ones in yellow as soon as they sing again, so you can learn to make the connection.
