You don't think that it's one of the horseflies? Here is a link that might be useful:

The wingspan was about ?1 1/2" - 2" across, bigger than the vertical length of its body. I don't recall ever seeing a sawfly here, but it does look similar to that type of sawfly in the pictures on the internet. We have plenty of big flies, but they're horse flies, also some smaller yellow flies, don't know what kind, just that they sting. Sherry

Mydas fly? M. clavatus is the one I'm used to in the north, but Florida probably has other species - don't remember seeing them when I lived down there. Tucker.
