It is certainly some sort of squirrel (which is what a woodchuck/groundhog is). I don't live in groundhog range, but it looks like one to me.

I could be injured or sick which would explain its behavior.

Thanks for the reply. I watched it from a window for a while and it started nibbling some grass and eventually wandered off. Hopefully it'll be okay. I was mainly concerned that it might have rabies, but according to what I read online its behavior wasn't consistent with rabies.

looks like a woodchuck, aka whistle pig or ground hog. they don't move fast, and don't act too scared of people, but if you get close they waddle/run off.

the ones i've seen don't have the white around the eye

if you have them in your area, you would see them along the road dead regularly

I live about an hour north of Atlanta, Georgia. I see a lot of tree squirrels and possums dead along the road, but I don't recall seeing animals like the one I photographed.

Your description of a woodchuck's behavior around people is consistent with how the animal I saw acted. I know size/scale are hard to judge from photos, but the first time I saw the animal, even before I had any idea what it might be, I immediately thought that it was a juvenile. Not a baby, but not fully grown either.

I don't know what to say about the white around the eyes. I wish I could have gotten a better picture of its head. Maybe its eyes are partially closed and that's the eyelids.
