Mating cooper hawks, continued

The weather here has turned rainy and cooler, so little activity with our cooper hawk couple other than a branch or two added to their nest.

I observed the ritual today that I saw last year:

The male flys into our yard with a fresh kill and calls for the female. Sometimes she arrives immediately and nabs the kill from the male, other times she hangs around, allowing the male to pluck and start eating himself and he will leave it on a branch for her.

After she has taken her fill, he approach her to mate.

Today it took her about 10 minutes to come in for the meal. This is the best time to watch the male. He is very patience and doesnÂt seem to mind having us around. The female on the other hand is more flighty, only allowing us to approach as her as she is eating. After eating she spent some time rearranging branches in the nest.

I will try and send a short video (real player format) from last year.
