One year I had pretty good luck pulling up several whole plants, pruning them a little and hanging them upside down from the (high) ceiling of my garage. I don't think the really hard green ones ripened, but many of the others did, and beautifully (perhaps only the ones showing some blush of color, I don't remember). Since we've moved prematurely into fall -- one weather guy referred to this month as Septober here in Minnesota--and I have a ton of tomatoes on my plants, I'm certainly going to try this method again and hope for the best.

gp you're describing what MJ growers do to increase the THC level in their product and this will do nothing for tomatoes. When you pruned them they most likely bled out everything from the wounds which would not help or hinder ripening. Any tomatoes that have blushed will ripen on the kitchen counter or garage work bench and don't need to stay on the vine.

If you REALLY want to ripen tomatoes on the vine, you need to provide stress to the plant. In various posts on this site, I have seen people claim great success with severing minor portions of the feeder roots. You can accomplish this by inserting a shovel relatively close to the plant, breaking many of the roots, or by pulling up on the stem and twisting a little (this method freaked me out - had images of snapping the plant in half). The idea is to trigger a survival response where the plant decides to drop all of its fruit in an effort to spread its seed as quickly as possible (this means most existing fruit will immediately blush and start to ripen). If you don't want to do anything that extreme, the counter-ripening method explained by taz is standard and reliable.

You can also just cut off the growth point. This way the plant will put all it's energy in the present fruit and not producing more flowers/fruit.

You can wait until it's going to freeze and pull the entire plant. You don't have to hang it upside down. The tomatoes that have started to turn yellow-ish will ripen.

I pull the really green ones, that haven't started to change color, and make green enchilada sauce out of them. I like the green tomatoes better than tomatillos for enchilada sauce.
