Mesh size for snakes

I'm building an outdoor cage for my birds. There's a lot of snakes around here and I would like to be sure the snakes will not be able to get in. The birds are starlings, their weight is 70-90g (2-3 oz), or about the size of a mockingbird or cockatiel. How large would a snake have to be to kill birds like mine? And what mesh size wire is needed to stop a snake this size? I have have two choices, 1/2" and 1/4". At night they enjoy eating the bugs that come into there cage (drawn by a lamp) so the larger size works better because it allows the larger insects/moths easy passage. But it should be safe as well. I want to be 1000% sure they will not be injured by snakes while in this cage.
