I forgot to mention, if you do decide to use a trap, don't leave it open overnight. Groundhogs are out early in the morning and late in the afternoon/evening, so I would set my alarm for 6am, go out and open the trap, then close it before dark. I learned the hard way that you will catch things you don't want to catch if you leave the trap open overnight. I got a skunk the first night I put the trap out. Luckily, I had a brave friend who wasn't afraid to open the door to let the skunk out. The trap was quite small (I thought at the time it was something small eating my garden), so the skunk was crammed into the trap and couldn't lift it's tail. I then got good advice here to just leave the trap open during the day. I also got a bigger trap when I saw the groundhog in my garden! He wasn't fitting in the little trap.

the only solution to a groundhog is to move him away. They eat what they find. In past years I've trapped and relocated 4 groundhogs. Best bait: peanut butter in have-a-heart trap. Another way to keep them out is fencing. I created a rather unique fence with deer netting, some garden border wire fence at the bottom and twine to keep the netting up. It worked well and I supplemented it with dried blood (sounds gruesome I know but it keeps the deer away too). I don't think seven will make that much of a difference and I personally don't want to eat stuff that's been treated with seven. ...

Peppi, that is terrible! I am glad that things didn't get worst. I am sure you will have enough to do for many days to get back to normal. Just in case: 1. Get a few big fans to dry out as soon as you can to avoid mold growth. 2. Turn you house heat higher will help dehumidify. 3. Get a dehumidifier. 4. If there is a way you can buy a small air conditioner, a portable air conditioner, or if you can remove a window air conditioner, run the air conditioner in doors. An air conditioner is the same machine as a dehumidifier. If you do that make sure you tilt the A/C a little so that water can drain out from the drip pan. (on the condenser coil side of the AC). Some AC units have a drain plug. AC units are designed to splash the moisture on the condenser coil to save energy. You want to make sure it is not doing that by draining away the water. How large an area and what type of brush hog? Tractor drawn might be a bit heavy, but what's to lose? A mower on steroids type of brush hog shouldn't be an issue at all, or you could use a weed whacker with a blade. The I'd give the whole area a good thick layer of mulch which the bulbs should come up through without issue. This summer when the bulb foliage is dying back, start mowing and keep it mowed as short as possible. If you maintain the mowing and the mulch and perhaps do a bit of hand weeding or judicious use of glyphosate, you may well get it enough under control to plant a desired groundcover such as some of the more rigorous daylilies that will shade/crowd out many of the weeds.
