Second is def some type of fennel, not sure of the type tho. Salt was dead on the poke weed. Hate the stuff myself! My Granma used to eat it. Careful with the berries as they will stain...even after birds eat them.

Wayne...up to now the wisdom from my other pals was it's a Juvenile Rat snake...it does look more like a racer....interesting...I saw an adult in the same area last fall....and man...she was BOOKING....I had my camera with me and I couldn;t even get a pic....and just like that she dissappeared....couldn't find her anywhere...looked by every small shrub etc... hbwright...I started using the lasagna method with newspapers...in this case, I had some cardboard, and I weighted it down, but never got to mulching it, as it was in an area thats a Work In Process......perhaps some discreetely laid cardboard would attract some vole eating machines....I've had adult racers and corn snakes as well...but I'm yet to see the dreaded "lasagna snake"!!!

Thanks Jean. You are always so good at answering my ID questions. I did hand pick it off the plant and found a few more a bit smaller on the same plant. I will continue to keep an eye out for more. Liisa

It is indeed a Gray Rat Snake Gray Rat Snake link, but it is an intergrade with a Yellow Rat Snake Yellow Rat Snake link - picture at bottom of page. They are two subspecies of the greater American Eastern Rat Snake group, Elaphe obsoleta. The Gray is E. o. spiloides, the Yellow is E. o. quadrivittata. The Gray has blotches, the Yellow has stripes; the intergrade (or intraspecific hybrid looks like this Intergrade link, and the scientific name is written like this: Elaphe obsoleta spiloides x quadrivittata. This is one of the things that gives a lie to the bigot saying of "things of different kinds or color don't interbreed in nature"; uh, yeah, they do, all the time.
These are great eaters of rats, but also take other small mammals, some small birds, eggs, and the occasional frog or lizard. Very good to have around!
