What do you suppose is doing this?

After work today I was walking around my gardens admiring all the hard work I'd done over the weekend. When I came to the front flower bed, I noticed several of the gooseneck loosestrife were lying on the ground. Upon closer examination I see that in the middle of the plants is an area about 1 foot around that all of the mulch has been pushed aside right down to the bare earth. At one side of the circle is a hole, about the size of a softball. What in the world could have done this? I'm sure it had not been like this over the weekend. Is this the work of a rabbit? Is it nesting time? Any other thoughts on it?

With where you are located it's possible that the brown on your leaf tips is a result of salt build up in the soil as you've cut back on watering with the cooler weather. Because you have a small tree if you're watering by a dripper or small amount in general the naturally occuring soil akalinity will take it's toll on the roots. Try giving a deep watering to get the salts below the soil line - no new leaves will be produced until the spring, but you'll get built up minerals rinsed below where the roots are growing. My first thought was also a possible HVAC vent of some kind. However, as I stared at that picture, I'm pretty sure that creepy doll blinked, so I will not be returning to this thread to see how you resolve this issue. Good luck.

*sigh* put the all the groceries and water away that we've bought over the past two days in case we lose power with Irene (on well & septic so, no power, no water!). I've just finished organizing all the school supplies so the kids can now fill their backpacks in case school starts Monday (I expect it to). I finally finished all the laundry (except microfiber cloths) so we'll all have clothes for the week if no laundry is possible. I've also gotten coolers ready, gotten the candles out, made sure the flashlights all have batteries (except the "D"...none to be found and I only have enough for one lantern!) and misc other tasks, again in prep. Then there was all the other stuff we've done today (moving porch, deck, and garden furniture into the garage & shed, & finished house cleaning b/c my sister from NC plans to come up tomorrow despite the hurricane - on her way to NJ...where it's supposed to be even worse than here!!!) So far, Irene doesn't seem to be as bad as I expected based on all the "talk" over the past couple of days (to my kids' dismay...they don't want to start school yet!)...but we are inland and not too close to the Chesapeake Bay...

Pocket gophers are rodent type critters which live in the dirt beneath the soil line. There are actually a number of critters which live under the soil. Moles which eat insects, and gophers which eat plant material. There are also voles as well. All live in most places in the continental US, including Alaska. Gophers are a hard critters to rid your yard of. My dog digs them up, but digs up eveything else in the process. Ask your local nursery about traps available in your area.

Mystery solved. It was a rabbit. I startled one out of the high grass near the wall of my above ground pool. When I looked where it had come from, I found an exact replica of the cleared area and hole in the front garden.
