I had 2 arborists looks at it and ended up getting it pruned off, its looks goofy right now. I could post a picture as well. To answer your other questions: When to prune - DO NOT prune it now, this is the worst time to prune it. Maples should be pruned early summer or late fall. Being from the milwaukee area and seeing and growing AB maple, the tree will be in striking distance of your house in 10 years. The chances of the co-dominant leader snapping really depends on the pic. The tigher the crotch angle the worse off.

Thanks everyone, the photo's DO help. The faucets are installed as I mentioned, so this is the placement they will have to remain (they never asked me - and I never realized that they would just put them here. I would have preferred it mounted on the deck, and would have indicated that if I knew they were about to install.. but it's too late. The only options I have is to go to the lower neck, which I am not really that found of, - or the waterfall faucet (great suggestion!!). I think though... after seeing sujafr pictures, I'll live with them a while and see how I feel. They do make the sick faucet and maybe once everything is in it's place.. it will come together.I will take a picture of the actual tub and faucet tomorrow and post it so that you can see the real thing.

I'd suspect winter cold. Duranta is not all that hardy, tolerating only to around 25F before experiencing damage. One might be in just a slightly more protected location than the other. You could try cutting back hard but I have no firsthand knowledge of how likely it is to come back from that.
