Hmmmm. My first step would have been to dispose of the rotting lemon. Then, set out a small dish with some apple cider vinegar (or juice) and dash of dish soap to bait the stragglers over night. Ridding the kitchen of fruit flies is pretty easy.

If you do have fungus gnats, a mosquito dunk, soaked overnight in a gallon of water, should help. I can't remember where I first saw that remedy for fungus gnats, but it helped me tremendously. I think it kills the gnat larva, if I'm not mistaken. You can find the mosquito dunks at Lowes, Walmart, or just about any garden center. You soak one overnight in a gallon of water, and use the water to soak the soil around your plants where you are having the gnat problem. During the summer months, I keep a plastic gallon-sized watering can filled with water and a mosquito dunk, just in case. HTH~ Renee

They could be either fungus gnats or black aphids - neither will do much if any harm to the plants and can usually be controlled with just water spray just as you did. The mix for soapy water spray is 1T of liquid soap to 1 gallon of water and shake well. But it can be harmful to the plant if not used correctly: only lightly mist the bugs and not the whole plant, do NOT drench the leaves, and do NOT spray in the direct sun or the heat of the day. Okey dokey I got some pics. The first two are of what I'm guessing are the adults, hope they are clear enough. The last one is the underside of the leaf, there are lots of black 'spots' that are too small to really see. For all I know it's larvae of some kind, or the bug's poop. And there is definitely a silk like substance on a lot of the leaves. In the first pic you can see some of it off to the right. I got a spray insecticide. It's called Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap. I sprayed it on all the leaves and the undersides. Thanks for all your help :) I really hope this works. Any ideas on what they are, and suggestions on getting rid of them, is very much appreciated :)
