Frost damaged tomato plants

Hello,

New to gardening here, I've been housesitting and garden sitting all summer, alls gone well until a very cold snap last night. I had gone ahead and put sheets over the tomato plants which are loaded with green tomatoes. I had heard that it was going to warm up so didn't take them off the vines.

Well I uncovered them this morning, it's sunny and warming up, and some of the plants look wilted and dark.

Questions are. Do I take the tomatoes off these plants or leave them? How will I know if the tomatoes themselves were damaged?

I do know once I take them off what to do as I've read them on these helpful forums, just not sure at what point to take them off.

Hi and welcome to the friendly forum ;-)

It really depends because one person's idea of a cold snap isn't necessarily the same as another's. If it was below 30 degrees (-1 C), for more than a couple of hours probably they are in bad shape. But depending on how wet the leaves get has a big effect on the damage in those circumstances, as well as how well the sheets kept the wind off and moderated the temperature drop, none of which I can see from Florida ;-). Probably there's not much to see, but the wilting you describe would be worth posting to get others' opinions.

If it was mild, short and protected, the plants may be craving sun and getting the temperature up as high as possible with maximum sunlight is a priority if they were mine. Yes, it does freeze here too, light freezes are what I contend with all winter, jumping between -2 C and +2 C (in breeze anything in the 30's F (somewhere around 5 C and below) can cause frost damage if unprotected, especially if there isn't a nice warming sun ASAP.

One thing I'm going to do this winter is buy one of those cheapo digital thermometers that shows the high and low for the last 24 hours besides the current temp, and put it in the covered area to see whats going on overnights. You can get them for well under $10 US from the popular auction site from the country that ships out billions of them for less that it costs for postage here. But even then, the temperature varies all over the place under so I'm not sure what good it will do, though it's definitely worth a try. Not sure how helpful that would be in a northern climate but like I said, we skirt freezing through the winter probably a dozen times, what's to lose...

hello, I live in Kentucky, so we are pretty much in the same area. If you have the room inside and your banana is showing signs of new growth after the frost damage, then by all means keep it alive, in a sunny location of course. Water when needed, use fertilizer very lightly while growing indoors. Depending on size of plant, determines the size of your corm or rhizome. Small plants will have much less corm to feed off of, thus, if you can keep small plants alive indoors then its better than making them go dormant. If you have a large well established banana at least a year old, then your chances of survival are greater when you let them go dormant for the winter indoors. To store inside, cut pstem down below leaf level, cover with cloth, in a dark cool room. No need to water,feed during this time. Once spring arrives, and the threat of frosty weather leaves, then place outside, water and feed the banana to start growth again. Now if you decide to keep them alive indoors, and your damaged bananas look awful from the frost, you can cut off the leaves and stem below the damage, and the plant should take off again. If you are growing indoors, then the process will be a little slower. If kept in a warm, sunny area, watered and feed, the plant will recover from area cut and start regrowth. This process is only if you want to keep them alive indoors, and you do not want the long stem with one leaf sticking out the top. You will loose height, however your new growth will look nicer. Or, you can cut the damaged leaves off, and let the plant continue to grow from that point with the one leaf at the top. Your choice. I hope I didnt sound to confusing.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging remarks. Yes, I had looked around for frost damage using the search and found some older threads but nothing pertaining to watering or putting them back out after a freeze. I really don't know much about the jades, just a beginner here starting out with a new love for succulents and cacti. Been doing lots of reading and researching for what's best in my area (zone 7 in the No. Calif. foothills) I had thought my jade was "large" until I finally saw some pics here. Mine is just a baby compared to those. It's about 2 1/2 feet tall but had been pruned like a tree with beautiful twisty, knarly thick trunk and branches. I think mother nature decided it needed to be a little fuller. I'm hoping it will come back even more beautiful and interesting than it was before. I actually just got it earlier this summer from a Craig's list add from a woman getting rid of a lot of old plants left from an nursery that had gone out of business. I only paid $2.50 for it. I bought a lot of stuff I know nothing about just because it was so cheap and cool looking. Now I'm trying to figure out what they are and how to treat them. Since I'm handicapped I can't really do much "in the ground" gardening but I do have lots of container plants on my decks. They looked so beautiful during the spring and summer months. I think this new hobby may turn into an obsession if I'm not careful! Thanks again everyone. Christine

We dropped to 32/33 here last night/early morning(Ocala National Forest area).My Tomatoe plants are nearly 3ft high set in 6ft high cages,so it was a real pain to try & cover them.I wrapped as many sheets as I could find(& am doing the same tonight)around the cages.I could see some cold damage this morining,but it seemed only the very top growth suffered-time will tell.My peppers & cukes/squash were all covered in sheets & seem fine.Newly sprouted beans seem OK also,but I think they will be stunted for a while.I took a chance planting/setting all these out so early,as my frost clear date is around March 20th or so,but if I get a few ripe tomatoes right about then,I'll be happy.I will have one or two small greenhouses up & running by this time next year,so will not need to gamble on getting my Spring plants in the ground so soon.

Keep in mind that hot air goes up, cold air goes down. The weather services measure temperature @ 2 m height (~ 6.5 feet), meaning that the temperature during the night will always be lower at the ground level (unless some extreme situations like soil absorbing a lot of heat during a sunny day then emanating it throughout the night). That's probably why you had frost even though temp was 36. I've had a similar situation, but temperature went down to 30 (probably slightly less @ ground level, but only for an hour or two)! The weather guy missed completely, and i found 13 wilted plants next morning (whole plant, along with the growing tip). They were planted quite deep, so i presumed the roots didn't freeze. I just left them in the ground, without pruning, and in 2-3 weeks time they actually recovered even though they looked completely dead. At the time i had another 50 that have only had their foliage slightly damaged, so i thought i'd give those 13 a go, and it worked. So i'm also with your father on this ;)
