What kind of tortoise is this?

We found this tortoise outside in our backyard yesterday. Our dog bit into its' shell and we are trying to cure it. I would like to know what kind of tortoise it is, what it eats, and what type of environment it needs to be in as it cures.

Also, what procedures should we use to help cure its injured shell? Right now we are trying to clear any infection on its shell with hydrogen peroxide.

Appears to be a gopher tortise. We have them in south Ga. They eat grass, some plants, melon, apples, etc. I have been told that hydrogen peroxide destroys the new growth that heals wounds in humans. Maybe animals also ?

Paul and his wife adopted the tortoise... we couldn't ask for a better place for it. After meeting them in person I have no problem sleeping at night knowing it has the perfect home. People need to think ahead of time when they aquire an exotic pet... how big they get, what they have to eat, housing, etc. We gave the tortoise an excellent living environment while we had it but I should have put my foot down when it was brought home knowing the size it would get and that my son most likely would loose interest in it and your's truly would be taking care of it.

Thanks! Gawrsh... These tortoises are usually about up to 14 inches long and 8 inches tall. Not as big as the huge ones in the zoos. Sad story. When I was a little kid, I remember going on a field trip to the zoo and we took turns riding the tortoise. I remember being lifted up on its back and it walked around with little school kids on its back. I wonder how many tons of school kids that tortoise had to give a ride to? I like tortoises. Next to monkeys...eeee-eee-oook-aaaa-ook which are my favorite animal. Penguins are pretty cool, too. Ok, what's your favorite creatures?

That is tortoise shell grained wood veneer. They did do furniture with tortoise shell inlay and I suppose in VERY expensive, sultan;s palace types of furniture, they did use av eneer of tortoiseshell....but the term tortiose shell veneer means a wood grain looking like tortoise shell....usually a burl grain. Another big clue is the fact that your piece is manufactured....very unlikely to have any exotic materials.

It does look like a gopher tortoise. They are a threatened species, so I hope it will be okay over time. Have you consulted a vet regarding the injury? Gopher tortoises eat grass, leaves and fruits and vegetables like melons, berries, apples and mushrooms.
