Hello! I posted this over in the Texas forum and thought I would try here also.

A link to my gardening blog is below if anyone would be so kind to take a look. I have a mystery bug on my flowers:-)

Hi, Rebecca - those are aphids, and they are certainly not good for your plants - they suck the juices out of them and can be injurious in large numbers. Spray 'em now while there aren't a lot. Hope this helps -

Thank you Tucker. In my little gardening book it had a picture of aphids but they were brown. Now I know they come in yellow too!

They are only on my one plant. I inspected all my other plants. It should be easy enough to take care of.

Well, I'm sure I'll be back with another mystery bug one day! Thanks:-)

What you are calling the "younger version" looks like a green lacewing (a good predator insect). I think the first picture is some type of wasp, I've seen them around my flowers. It almost looks like a papaya fruit fly ( also called papaya wasp, tho not a wasp) but don't think it is. DM

After checking, I have confirmed that it IS the tersa sphinx moth, and from what I've read most places, it is considered a pollinator. Many photos of it are shown visiting brugs, nicotiana and other flowers, usually at night, but often enough during daylight to make it a good one to photograph. Hope you enjoy yours. Any soft bodied insect pest will be effectively controlled using Insecticidal soap, Neem oil or BT sprays. These products are safe and effective when applied following the directions on the containers. The key to success is to read all the words on the label; a novel concept for some of us! That would be me who learned this the hard way.

Thanks for the heads up. :-) Meant to reply sooner but time slips away. I got rid of the infestation and they haven't come back. I lost about a third of the oleander but I have faith it will come back just fine. I trimmed it back and it's showing no more signs of damage. Too bad those things are so destructive. They sure were interesting looking.

Is the plant a milkweed (Asclepias)? They look like the dreaded milkweed aphid.
