I hate it when people feel superior towards other living things on our planet. When will they get it we must live with them and protect them, so they keep the great balance our world feeds on. Just because they don't think things will get bad during their lifetime doesn't mean it won't effect their grand kids and their kids. Well I have a protected speices who I live with and welcome more.

WOW! THANK YOU!!! That's great! I was shocked to see the picture. I would never have guessed that in a million years. I think you are right!!! Yeah! :) So, that explains how these piles disappear after it rains. Its just a pile of dirt. My only question relates to the size. The pic you linked to doesn't have a discernable reference as those grass leaves could be any size. So since there is this size reference issue in the photo that you linked to, I will e-mail Walter Reeves at his site just to verify that the stuff in my yard is the right size for it to be these earthworm castings. It sure does look like it from the pic. I am so happy that's all it is! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!

Thanks, that makes sense. The grass is always matted down right near where I found the scat. It's definitely bedding for some sort of animal, and even thought its smack dab out in the open in my back yard, I've seen deer bedding a few feet away in the winter nights. A neighbor claims to have spotted a cougar behind their house. I normally wouldn't pay that any attention living in MD, but when the called the dept of natural resources, they were told that others had spotted what they thought was a "cougar" in the same area. Someone claims that they found cougar tracks, but I'm still highly doubtful. Just thought I'd check that rather large scat out with people who knew better than me. Thanks again.

Cat, dog or fox ... If it's fenced, probably not a dog. The dominant cat in an area will not bury their feces. And foxes use a "latrine area" in their territory. We had one using a mulched area side yard. http://lazygardens.blogspot.com/2014/05/do-arizona-foxes-poop-in-woods.html  To minimize recurrence, scatter HOT chili pepper flakes or powder in the area. They sniff and leave.
