Red squirrels in Georgia?

Since there's really no forum for this, I thought I'd try here. Has anyone heard/noticed red squirrels moving into northwest Georgia? I'm going to investigate more, but I'm pretty sure I'm seeing red squirrels in my trees and yard. I have seen gray squirrels with a hint of red or rust, but this is not what I'm seeing. Haven't got a photo - I'll try for that too.

Could they be Fox Squirrels (Sciurus niger)? They can be quite reddish in color over much of their range. They are a little larger than gray squirrels.

Red Squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) are quite small.

I'm not sure which of these two species range into Northern GA, though.

What you are seeing is most likely a Fox Squirrel. Red Squirrels are found in europe and eurasia not in the USA.

haaahaha...i now don't feel so bad knowing that a family of squirrels has taken up residence in my garage. good thing my garage is not attached to the house. but they have torn a huge hole in the back of my garage, and it seems that they are not even scared of me anymore. when i go in the garage, the mother squirrel does not even move from her spot up in the rafters. i swear today that one of them was waiting for me on my back porch....wtf?? thankfully my husband has just bought a giant assault rifle type pellet gun and is excited to use it. the squirrels have done so much damage to our garage, i almost feel like we might as well tear it down and build a new one. they have ripped down ALL the insulation, and the holes are ridiculous. so...good luck to all you squirrel hunters out there...and just remember...they might be cute..BUT THEY ARE STILL RATS!!!!

They eat them here in San Jose. I don't know any effective way of getting rid of them. Even if you trap/kill others will move into their space. Ideal would be have fruit contained in some kind of chicken wire where you have to open a door to go in and get fruit. EDIT: I should say these are grey squirrels

I've never had to deal with that problem, but I would see if there is a nearby government pest control department or check with a professional pest control company. Also, if there is any food source that encourages them to stick around (bird feeders or garden), I would make sure that is removed. I'm quite certain that the only solution will be some method of killing them. Transporting them to a distant location is basically the equivalent, since they won't have their accustomed food sources or protective nest, so will succumb to starvation or predation. A quick, humane death is preferable. Could you get or borrow one of the small breeds of dog who are designed for this work? Tie it to the tree you are concerned about, and that might help. But, the roots might suffer even more damage. Good luck with your problem. Martha

This is one of those times where it pays not to go whizzing past that 'preview message' page... . :) FHFchrish and Adawehi_Dikata, you are both correct. I meant to say 'red fox squirrel' and obviously just blew that. I looked them up and am pretty sure that's what I've got here, but they're really not supposed to be in our area. Of course, the ranges seem to change rather frequently for a lot of animals, so I would imagine it's possible they didn't read the book that says they're not supposed to be here! :D

We have red squirrels in the US, too as FHFchrish noted. They occur in the Appalachian mountains (as well as other areas) so could very well be in NW Georgia. We call them "boomers" because while small in size (compared to Grey or Fox squirrels) they are very "chatty" and have a large voice for a small mammal.
