What is this animal dung?

Any thoughts as to what this belongs to? It did not look like anything I've see before. It was thick and very cylindrical. Probably about 4 inches around and 7 long. Much bigger than human. It was taken in North East Texas this past weekend. Your thoughts are appreciated

RE: "Somebody has way too much time on their hands. lol."

I am a hunter looking to buy some land. I walked the land this weekend and couldn't identify a pair of tracks and some dung. So I thought I would post it. Seems to make good sence to me.

HELP!!! Animal(s) thinks they're at an all you can eat buffet

Thanks all for the Replies. I forgot to mention that this is my first year gardening, so I'm a bit on the beginner side. My first gardening area just turned out too small, then the second area wasn't enough. So I made a third, fourth and a fifth. I have crops all over the place (they do look great). That is why the fence idea was ruled out, just too much ground to cover. The other day, I caught him going into my shed. I closed the door on him and tried to figure out how I was going to remove him without having to kill it. Well, next thing I know, he somehow pushed the shed doors open (it was latched) and escaped. I have a burrow in my yard, I believe that the shed and my yard is their vacation home. Their place of residence is my neighbors yard. I could always lay stone all the way around my yard, but I would need a lot. (its at least close to 1000 feet of fence. I'm going to get a trap and trasfer them to a much nicer place far away from my garden.

What animals or animal parts have you composted?
Q

There is one other place I know of you are likely to read about composting animals. The humanure handbook website forum. It wasn't till I started humanure composting that I learned how to get a really good hot compost pile that would easily handle rotting carcass and control smell and other animals digging it up. So what have we composted. I really can't even count the bones and scraps of animals we have eaten since we always compost all food scraps that don't go to the chickens or worm bins. It is a firm rule here to avoid putting anything stinky in the trash can. So, animal bodies in our compost bin lately. 3 sick chickens we didn't want to make the rest of the flock sick. Any dead squirrels we find around the house. 12 rats we caugh And all fish parts that the chickens don't get, I've found that burying fish parts causes critters to dig up the yard or whatever plant I put over it so composting seems to be the best way for use to take care of it. I agree that this is an advanced composting thread. No one who is not confident of their ability to manage a hot compost pile should be putting dead bodies in it.

OT - Dung Beetle

Now that is a beautiful beetle! Speaking of dung, my aunt seemed rather horrified when I was hiking with her recently to see a butterfly (Fritillary, as I recall) wander around on the ground and then settle on the dog poop to get to the good stuff. :) -Jmcat

"ol Dungey doesn't look like he's any happier about those maters than you are, LOL!" -- hmmmm, maybe I should have phrased that a little differently, but I didn't expect what I posted to be be taken quite so literally. Since I too have spent a fair amount of time catching and cooking seafood in RI, NJ, and FL, I assumed that EVERYONE could see that he'd been for his last swim, probably in that large pot that he's perched on. So maybe it was a rather silly comment to post, but even so, I still like the mournful "Oh, sh!t" expression on ol Dungey's "face". Someone needs to come up with a good cartoon caption for that pic. -- BC --

Sorry, just made me step back and think, I'm lookin' at poo. Perhaps the others will be of some help.

Sorry I can't help with ID. But.. you know what they say about everything being bigger in Texas. (Sorry, I just couldn't resist. 8-] )

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say bear. Only thing I can think of that would be that big. Do a google image search for bear scat. You'll find an occasional cylindrical shape.

Everyone needs to take a look at the tracks posted in a separate thread, but that go along with this pile of poo. Though I suspect that there is a reasonable explanation for the 3 toed mystery, I don't see AT ALL how it could be the track of a bear.

Interesting mystery, I think!

Now, any 'scatologist' worth anything would have been able to determine (by sight, taste, smell, and feel) just what this varmint had eaten the day before.

Try this website. They have scat identifications, and tracks, too. I think it's interesting. If you find out what it is please post again.

I should have known better - I was eating my dinner. LOL

Looks like a pile of human poop to me. Old and dried up.

What is it made up of? Do you see little bones, or maybe some insect skeletons?

If so, wolves or cougars may be one of the culprits in that part of Texas.

If not, then calve dung is a more likely possibility, or possibly something in the equine family, such as mules, donkeys, miniature horses, etc.

Looking at the loaf in the photo, it looks like a some type of forager.

Any other info or tracks?

Might be a wild hog. Domestic variety that has gone feral.

We are overrun by wild hogs down here but I have never come across any of their dung that looks quite like that, but it is a very likely possibility, if they are running in your part of Texas. Depending on what they eat, their stool will vary in composition and content.

They will eat anything, and I DO mean anything. One hog hunter got attacked by one a couple of weeks ago.

Guess they make them for education purposes. Anyway there are pictures of all kinds of poop.

Bigfoot poop is larger and there is usually a greater quantity of it, since their large intestine is quite long.

Must be something else...
