Insects can be very picky when it comes to which tree they like and which ones they don't. Could be the leaves were more leathery on your other tree, a difference in nutrient levels or moisture in the leaves, or other factors. Hard to tell, but it happens frequently. It may be the nolo bait, but there are BT pesticides or a bacterial one out there in which you spread the insecticide around the area and the grasshoppers will become infected, then die. Seems like one of them you spread it around in the late summer to infect the grasshopper eggs laid in the fall, greatly reducing the number of hoppers the next year. With these, you wouldn't treat the tree but the grassy/wild areas around you. You'll have to search the internet for these. Where I've heard of them is around the edges of wheat or canola fields and waste areas to control hoppers so they don't invade the fields and require other treatments. Also, grasshoppers are quite mobile so spraying the tree may only actually hit a few hoppers and new ones just move in from untreated areas. You kind of have to spray a buffer area to keep them out. With the lack of grasshoppers observed on the tree, it may be there was something else working on the tree, too, so keep your eyes open next year for some other cause. Cheesecloth is often used to protect plants from insects, commonly on cole crops to keep the cabbage worms away. It will cut the light down a bit but still seems to let plenty through for healthy growth.

At the very least it seems to be of the canine family, you can see the claw marks in the tracks(cat's claws are retractable, will usually only be visible when they are running or pouncing)and the heel marks are much smaller than the toe marks. You're right that its not a bear track. Do you have a neighbour with a very large dog, say 90-100lbs or over? I'm not sure of their range, and it would seem unlikely that close to your house but do you have wolves where you live? I've included a link to an animal tracking website, and there is a picture of a dog track in snow towards the bottom of the page, and it looks very similar. You can also search other tracks if you think that its something else, there is a good list. Ok, all of the people trying to say that this is a double track, least of all some kind of deer double track, have clearly not seen it. I have seen several of them around a muddy creek in Marshall TX. Out in the Nesbitt area. Both left and right prints, and they were everywhere. There's no way that they could all have been any kind of double prints. There's also something stalking the wood around Nesbitt that doesn't sound like anything I have ever heard. I have lived here since I was a kid and sit outside at night all the time. My mom used to take us owl calling in the middle of the night when I was younger and I gained a great fondness for the sounds of nighttime animals. I have never heard anything like it before. Whatever it is, there are several of them that call back and forth to each other and only very late at night.
