NYJB has recently been profiled by Publishers Weekly because it is the one existing online review that has captured the attention of the publishing world. The New Yorker also recently cited NYJB. Our reviewers are both published authors and others able to write compelling reviews of books in their areas of professional or equivalent expertise. Please apply only if you are a published author/writer on animals or have professional expertise.

We are increasingly quoted, traffic to the site has grown dramatically, feedback is 100% positive, and we are swamped with requests for reviews. We generally publish reviews at 12:01 A.M. on date of release so that we are the first review of any new book we critique.

The Journal reviews both mainstream releases as well as many books in niche or non-mainstream genres and books by first-time authors than are infrequently covered by the other respected review publications.

Our permanent website after months on beta has been up since October. We are deep into the remaining administrative tech work that introduces new state-of�the-art function to the publishing world.

Reviewers all set their own pace for submitting reviews and are never asked to review books they prefer not to read.

We do not anticipate any material profit until the tech build is complete so that we can focus singularly on commercializing. And so, we are currently unable to pay reviewers for the reviews they contribute. However, we believe that most writers are underpaid for their work. It is our sincere hope and plan that the success of the New York Journal of Books will become a material source of supplementary income for all reviewers. I checked some of the recipes posted at various sites online. Her canned tuna does call for pressure canning. However, the tuna is topped with olive oil; the canner is vented "7-10 minutes", not 10 as now required, and no wait time is mentioned at the end of processing. I also found a recipe for "canned" stuffed peppers blanched in wine vinegar and water, stuffed with a bread crumb mixture, then packed into jars, covered with the cooking solution, topped off with olive oil and stored on the shelf. No processing. Here's another of her recipes, posted at Serious Eats. Marinated Baby Artichokes - makes 4 pints - Adapted from by Well-Preserved by Eugenia Bone. Ingredients 48 baby artichokes (about 6 pounds) 1 cup bottled lemon juice 2 cups white wine vinegar with 5% acidity 1 cup olive oil 2 garlic cloves, sliced (about 1 tablespoon) 2 teaspoons salt 2 bay leaves Procedure 1. Remove the tough outer leaves of the artichokes, reducing the volume of the vegetable by half, until each artichoke has the shape of a tear drop or candle flame, is pale pale green to yellow, and is soft to the touch. With a pairing knife, trim the base, removing all the rough surfaces. Cut the artichokes in half and pluck out any thistly interior leaves. 2. In a large nonreactive pot, combine lemon juice, vinegar, oil, garlic, salt, and bay leaves and bring to a boil. Add the artichokes and boil for 10 minutes. Remove the bay leaves. 3. Have ready 4 scalded pint jars and their bands. (To scald, simply dip the jars in boiling water. You don't need to sterilize the jars, as you will be processing them for over 10 minutes.) Simmer the lids in a small pan of hot water, to soften the rubberized flange. When the jars are dry but still hot, remove the artichokes from the marinade with a slotted spoon and pack them into the jars, filling the jars about three-quarters full. Resist the temptation to overpack or you will compromise your seal. Cover the artichokes with the marinade, distributing the garlic evenly and leaving 1/2 to 3/4 inch of headspace. Wipe the rims, set on the lids, and screw on the bands fingertip tight. 4. Place the jars in a pot fitted with a rack and add enough water to cover the jars by 3 inches. Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil over high heat. Process the artichokes for 25 minutes. Turn off the heat and remove the lid. After a few minutes remove the artichokes. 5. Allow the jars to cool completely before checking the seals. Allow the artichokes to season for 2 weeks before using, after which they'll keep in a cool, dark place for about a year. Once opened, keep in the refrigerator. In this case it looks like she's emulating the recipe from Colorado State Extension for Marinated Peppers, but whether it was tested with artichokes before publication I do not know. Her recipes sound excellent and I would consider buying the book but I would ignore all canning instructions (with the possible exception of sweet preserves) and treat it like any other recipe book. Felicia's Journey - William Trevor (1994) A title that was picked rather randomly off the TBR shelf, this was a great surprise read for me. William Trevor, described by Wiki as Ã¢ÂÂone of the elder statesmen of the Irish literary world,Ã¢ÂÂ is famous for his short stories, but his back list is HUGE and so there are loads of different books to choose from. HeÃ¢ÂÂs won loads of prestigious literary prizes (including the Whitbread Prize and five nominations for the Booker Prize.) Irreverent sidenote: He sounds a bit like the Snoop Dogg/Lion of the Booker World.* So - to the plot of this fast-moving and short book: Felicia is an unmarried and naÃÂ¯ve Irish girl who ends up getting pregnant by a visiting no-good lad from her village and who has moved away to England. In FeliciaÃ¢ÂÂs impoverished family, there are few options for her to follow, so she leaves Ireland to go to the Midlands to chase down this boy who, she is certain, would like to know she is pregnant and would do the right thing. Her family is against this lad from the get-go as her father believes that the guy has run off to join the British Army, and as they are extremely wound up in Irish Independence activity and history, and so to them, this act means he has joined the enemy. Along with this is the fact that the family is Roman Catholic and his father works at a convent in the garden, so options for her pregnancy are not available either. Poor thing - itÃ¢ÂÂs no win for her all around, it seems, and so she visits England for the first time - a foreign country for her as she has not traveled much before. Aside from the facts that Felicia has little money, no friends, no housing, and a fake address for this boy of hers, it doesnÃ¢ÂÂt look very hopeful. Then she meets Mr. Hilditch (always used with that title) who is a quiet non-descript middle-aged catering manager for a local factory near where Felicia is staying. He presents himself as a kind and rescuing father figure for her, but in his thoughts, the reader can see that there is a history of something weird. He has Ã¢ÂÂrescuedÃ¢ÂÂ girls before, but what has come of them? And will he do the same with Felicia? This is a taut psychological novel about the hunter and the hunted: Mr. Hildich is the predator and naÃÂ¯ve girls Ã¢ÂÂwho wonÃ¢ÂÂt be missedÃ¢ÂÂ are the prey. At the same time as this is happening, you also follow FeliciaÃ¢ÂÂs thoughts as she is scared and confused. She lives on the street for a few days, gets in with a rather strange religious group who can give her a place to sleep, and she keeps being circled by Mr. Hildich, as a shark does bleeding seals. You just know that something is going to happenÃ¢ÂÂ¦. But what? The ending comes quite quickly and itÃ¢ÂÂs not what I had thought it would do. (I love this unpredictability in a plot.) There are a few major twists and in the end, things are left hanging unsolved really....

how do you keep track of books read?

I've now tried both GoodReads and LibraryThing. So far I prefer the latter simply because more of the books I have read are in the database. I also like being to choose the actual cover of the edition I've read. Of course it's not perfect. I disagree with how it handles the issue of dates of publication. I personally prefer to note the year in which the work was first published, not necessarily the edition which I read. Other people may not think this is particularly important. The downside with LibraryThing of course is that it is a pay site. I have not reached my 200 book limit (I only entered a few years of books). Once I reach 200 titles, then I would have to pay $25.00 to continue. I haven't decided whether I am willing to pay for that privilege. GoodReads is a very good site. I didn't know that I could block on the "friends", quizzes, etc. Many people would enjoy those aspects of the GR experience. This may sound strange, but I am not particularly interested in "rating" books. If I like a book, I will remember the experience of reading it. Only rarely do I force myself to finish a book I don't like.
