Looks like an American Lady.

You mean an american painted lady

Nope, it's my understanding that there is Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) and American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis). This is Vanessa virginiensis. Vanessa cardui has 4 small spots on the hindwing vs. the 2 big spots. "American Ladies have big eyes" as they say. Vanessa virginiensis may also be referred to as "American Painted Lady", but I'm not sure.

This is supposed to be a comfirmed ID of the American Painted Lady. I was told the underside of the wings is the best way to tell, and it was based on the number of underwing spots.

Again, that's virginiensis based on the two big spots. I don't know if it's American "Painted" Lady. All of my field guides (Glassberg/Kaufman/etc.) just call it American Lady. Painted Lady is a different species.
